TYLER, Texas (KETK) — After years of grappling with storm damage, Pollard United Methodist Church in Tyler has found a path forward, marked by a symbolic roof burial service and a new partnership aimed at helping churches recover faster and more affordably after severe weather.

On Sunday, the church held a blessing and a burial service for its storm-damaged roof, making both an end and a beginning for the congregation. The roof, which sustained significant hail damage during the 2020 storm, had become a lingering financial burden for the church.

Faced with high repair estimates and limited resources, church leaders struggled to cover the cost of replacement, an increasingly common challenge for houses of worship dealing with aging infrastructure and extreme weather.

Now, the church is collaborating with Priority Roofing through its flagship initiative, Storm Shield, a program designed to help churches navigate the complex and often costly process of post-storm repairs.

As part of the program, participating churches receive a full roof assessment to evaluate damage and identify necessary repairs. The service also includes a professional review of the church’s insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage, an often-overlooked step that can significantly impact recovery costs.

In addition, churches enrolled in Storm Shield gain access to a rapid response team. Priority Roofing says it can inspect roofs and perform emergency repairs within 48 to 72 hours following a storm, helping prevent further damage and speed up the recovery process.

DID YOU KNOW? With all this hail in East Texas lately, makes you think - how big can hail really get? Well a record-breaking hailstone fell in Texas in 2024 measuring a massive 7.1 inches in diameter, is the largest ever recorded in the state.

It was found near Vigo Park (outside Amarillo) by a storm chaser who first thought it looked like a gallon jug of milk in a ditch. Turns out, it was a giant piece of hail—bigger than a typical energy drink can!

That’s Texas weather for you…everything really is bigger!
