Kill your honeysuckle! This week is the easiest time to identify bush honeysuckle (because of the blooms) and effectively kill your honeysuckle. Please use an appropriate herbicide. I use glyphosate at a 50% rate. It may be even easier to identify in the fall once everything else has gone dormant and it is the only thing green, but I have seen mixed results with fall applications (especially foliar). So if you have honeysuckle, spend some time treating those isolated plants before they become a huge unbearable problem.

Busy time of year for sure! Plots are up and already attracting some deer. A couple stands went up, even the damaged ones. Soybean fields have been heavily browsed this year so a major herd reduction seems appropriate. I found a white oak on a field edge that is loaded with acorns. Things are lining up nicely for a great season of fun and excitement!

Planting my personal food plots today and picked up a shed…just not the way I wanted to pick up a shed. I was able to get it plugged and aired back up and back in operation in short order. Hopefully the deer are thankful for the efforts we make!

Photo taken on July 17th when this new fawn was only a few days old! This is usually an indication of a deer population over carrying capacity. Aren’t trail cameras fun?!?!

With the prescribed fire, edge feathering, TSI, pollinator plot improvements and other habitat improvements it’s not hard to see why we have a fairly stable population of turkeys while the rest of the state is in bad shape. With our island of habitat it’s not hard to imagine that the predators know where the food is but it is always neat to get some action shots on the trail camera. I personally don’t think this coyote caught this gobbler since I was there 40 minutes later and flushed them out of the trees. The coyote won’t give up…

I just wanted to thank all my clients and friends for the support, kind words, prayers and additional grace and understanding through this latest trial, but after 3 weeks the new boss is finally home. We couldn’t have gotten this far without the loving help of so many and I can’t thank God enough for my son’s health. God Bless!

I found the biggest deer rub I’ve ever seen in my life. I wish it was on my place! I have an 18 inch bar on my Stihl chainsaw so I know the tree is at least 16 inches in diameter. Bucks love to rub on aromatic trees such as this sassafras.

When I first saw these pictures I assumed the rut had been hard on this old Missouri warrior. Snips 3 is a four or five year old buck that looks like a 2 year old! Upon further inspection I noticed the injury to his hind leg. Hopefully he will show himself during daylight hours as the season winds down but if not I know the quality food and cover on the farm gives him a better than average chance of surviving the winter.

Final day of harvest at the Wolfe farm. It’s great to get the crops out and move on to the next task. Busy week ahead of planting cover crops and treating invasive bush honeysuckle.

Glade restoration project at Buford Mountain Conservation Area down in the Arcadia Valley. Has to be one of the steepest jobs we have ever done. The view from the top of the mountain was breathtaking!
