When winter storms get really intense, they oftentimes produce "mesoscale snow bands". When we talk about the "mesoscale" it means a smaller scale feature (fairly skinny band of intense snow). Indeed that is what has developed today. These bands produce intense snowfall rates of 2-4" per hour and we have seen that today. If you are outside of the band, the snowfall is not nearly as impressive and snow totals will likely be lower. This band is slowly moving westward, but then should come back toward the northeast this evening. Pass on your measurements...thanks!
