Sometimes when you find sawdust and you think it’s from carpenter ants, it’s really not. In this situation, it was acrobat ants.

Don’t know if it’s something about me, or what but it seems like I have this tendency to find a little bit unusual jobs. Today’s responding to a call about carpenter ants. Homeowner is seeing sawdust around a bow window. Seems pretty straightforward, it’s most likely carpenter ants, but NO. After inspecting I knew there were ants nesting in the void space and possibly in framing above the window.  so I proceeded to drill a few small holes so I could inject material into the void space. A great deal of ants came pouring out as I treated it, which I expected, but I was a little surprised to see acrobat ants, not carpenter ants. It’s not unheard of, but it’s not that common to have acrobat ants move into areas previously hollowed out by carpenter ants and for them to be pushing frass out. Just not something you see every day. So when someone says they think they have carpenter ants, just because they are finding sawdust sometimes it’s not actually carpenter ants. 🐜

No pictures with this one, but interesting catch today. Noticed an odor in the playhouse when I opened it up this afternoon. Started checking traps and of all things had caught a snake in one of the snap traps. It was a first in 48 years of doing this.
I wouldn’t intentionally target snakes since in most situations they are actually beneficial, but let’s just say Joyce M Peaslee hates snakes so she wasn’t unhappy that it was caught. LOL
You never know what you’ll encounter in this business. Some times every day is an adventure!

They are starting to build nest. This one was partially hidden behind the trim piece on my garage door. I saw it when I opened the door to get something out for my grandson. Unfortunately for them they chose the wrong place to build a nest.
If you’re seeing nest starting it is better to deal with them sooner than later. They will increase in size and the numbers in the nest very quickly this time of year. Right now you may just be able to knock the nest down and dispose of it. In a few weeks that’s probably not a good choice.

Today’s pest is powder post beetles. Rare to ever actually see the beetles but they leave their telltale sign of very fine powdery frass, similar to the consistency of flour. As you can see in the attached pictures fresh frass that indicates ongoing current activity is very light color even when coming out of a piece of wood that is in this case approximately 130 years old. Very rare to find them in newer construction with lumber now kiln dried which reduces the moisture content to the point that they can no longer survive in it.
If you happen to live in an older structure and see something that looks like what you see in these pictures give me a call. Would be happy to take a look at it for you to see if it is something that is a concern that needs to be addressed.

More pics of the holes carpenter ants had made in spray foam insulation as well as a couple of pics of wood frass from them nesting in plate at top of an exterior wall at roof/ wall junction. The carpenter ants were becoming quite active after I dusted the windows they had chewed open in this spray foam insulation to dump frass from as they continued to expand their nest.
