Necessary maintenance under the sink

The angle stop is used to control the flow of water to an individual fixture. These valves come in handy when water needs to be shut off because of a leak or the need to replace a fixture. Due to Arizona’s hard water issues, these valves fail more often. To extend their life, they should be turned off and back on at least twice a year. Valve failure can cause serious water damage. To check your valve, rotate the handle clockwise to shut off and counterclockwise to resume flow. Older valves will turn several times before the flow is stopped. Newer valves will only rotate 90 degrees (1/4 turn) to stop the flow. If these valves are not working properly in your house, you may need A Little Help (480-524-4302).

Increase your dryer’s efficiency.
Your dryer works by pushing out hot, moist air so your clothes can dry. If your dryer vent becomes blocked by lint, the air will not be able to expel moisture like it was designed to do, reducing its efficiency. In addition, dryer vents are the second leading cause of fires in the home. Having your dryer exhaust vent cleaned on a regular basis will reduce the risk of fire, reduce energy costs/utility bills, and reduce drying times. If it has been more than a year since your vent was cleaned, you may need A Little Help (480-524-4302).

Smoke alarms, Are yours still good?
Smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends your smoke alarms be tested every month and replaced every ten years. The manufacture date is on the back of the detector. If yours is too old, you may need A Little Help (480-524-4302)

Hello from A Little Help,

Air conditioner tip.

It is starting to get warm, especially for those of us in Arizona. This time of year, we all expect a great deal from our air conditioners so I thought I might provide a little tip that might save you a lot of money.

When your air conditioner runs it produces condensation (water) and this condensation must be disposed of somewhere. On most homes there are two condensation lines protruding from the side of your house, one close to the ground, the primary line, and one several feet above it, the secondary line. They are usually constructed of ¾ inch PVC which comes out of the wall and then turns down. If the condensation is draining properly, the primary line will be the only line dripping water.

If you see water dripping from the secondary line, or rust stains on the side of your house just below this line, you likely have a problem. The secondary line is there in the event the primary line clogs. If you see rust, it is likely your primary line has been clogged for a while and the overflow pan under your air handler is rusting. Now, if your secondary line clogs, the pan will overflow into your attic which can cause thousands of dollars of damage.

Go outside after your air conditioner has been running for a while. Find your primary and secondary lines. See which one is draining. If it is the lower line everything is draining fine. If it is the upper line you may need A Little Help (480-524-4302).
