This is part of ongoing adjustments to recover costs from hurricanes (like Idalia, Debby, Helene, and Milton) and fund grid upgrades, solar plants, and storm resilience projects.
Average Increase Breakdown:
• For a typical residential customer using 1,000 kWh/month (TECO’s benchmark):
• Monthly bill rises from $136.44 to $145.58—an average $9.14 increase per bill (about 6.7% hike).🫣🤬
• Broader estimates from consumer groups like Food & Water Watch peg it at $5.51/month for the average user, factoring in slight usage variations.
• Over 5 years: This adds to prior hikes, making bills ~82% higher than in 2020—$939 more annually (or ~$78/month total cumulative).
Note: Actual impact varies by usage (e.g., higher for 1,000–1,250 kWh homes: $20–25/month including storm surcharges). Fuel and environmental costs (which fluctuate) make up the rest of your bill. TECO notes rates remain below the national average, but Tampa Bay users paid some of Florida’s highest this summer.
