Termite damage is rarely covered by homeowners insurance, and it is usually invisible until it is expensive. What makes a coastal home vulnerable is simple: subterranean termites need moisture, and damp soil against a foundation with an unsealed crack nearby gives them everything they need.

Termite protection at Wilkey includes moisture control, sealing cracks in the foundation, barriers and bait systems, and consultation on treated wood. After a wet summer and a full storm season, those conditions are worth assessing.

Nests that started small back in spring reach their largest size in late summer.

More insects, less available food, and a colony that defends itself harder. That is why August and September are the months homeowners on the coast actually notice them.

A nest under an eave, in a shrub, or in the ground can go unseen all summer and still be at peak population right now. Disturbing one at this stage is how people end up with multiple stings, so this is not the season to handle it yourself.

Anything that holds moisture against your home invites the pests that damage it most. Firewood stacked against the wall, thick mulch piled up to the siding, and leaf or wood debris left along the foundation all create the cool, damp, wood-rich conditions that termites, ants, and roaches are drawn to. Worse, wood stacked against the house gives termites a direct path from the soil to your structure.

Keeping firewood elevated and stored away from the house, pulling mulch back a few inches from the foundation, and clearing debris removes those conditions. It reduces the pressure, but it does not remove a colony that is already active nearby. If you have had wood against the house for a while, a termite inspection is worth scheduling.

Late August means move-in season, and with students heading to campuses across the region—including Coastal Carolina University right here in Conway—bed bugs travel more this time of year than almost any other.

Dorms, shared housing, moving trucks, and secondhand furniture are all common ways bed bugs hitch a ride into a home. They are experts at going unnoticed until the population is well established.

Wilkey Services offers professional bed bug control, including inspections designed to catch the problem early. If a student is coming home for a visit, moving into new housing, or bringing home furniture from an unknown source, an inspection is a small step that can save an enormous headache later.

Most cockroaches are nocturnal. They hide during the day and forage at night, staying tucked into cracks, behind appliances, and under sinks where it is dark and damp. So when you see one crossing the kitchen floor in broad daylight, it usually is not bad luck. It is a signal.

Daytime activity often means the hidden population has grown large enough that roaches are being crowded out of their usual harborage and forced to search for food and space in the open. In other words, the one you saw is rarely the only one. Store-bought sprays may scatter them, but they do not reach the source, which is why an established infestation almost always needs professional treatment to actually resolve.

If you are seeing roaches during the day, call Wilkey Services at 843-281-0859 or reach us at wilkeyservices.com.

One of the simplest things you can do to reduce pest pressure this month has nothing to do with the pests themselves. It is your landscaping. Tree limbs that touch the roof and shrubs that press against the foundation give rodents, ants, and roaches a direct bridge onto and into your home. They travel the greenery like a highway.

Trimming branches back from the roofline and keeping shrubs a few inches off the exterior walls removes those easy pathways. It is good maintenance, but it is not a substitute for protection. Landscaping only reduces the invitation. A professional service plan is what keeps pests out once they arrive, and our technicians can point out the specific spots on your property that are creating pressure.

You might not see them yet, but late summer is when the coast's mice and rats begin shifting their behavior. As natural food outdoors starts to thin and nights slowly cool toward the end of the month, rodents begin testing homes for shelter, warmth, and steady food. They often follow tree limbs that touch the roof or overgrown shrubs that reach the foundation, using them as a bridge to your home.

Catching this shift now, before it becomes an indoor infestation, is far easier than dealing with an established colony in the walls later. Late summer is the window where prevention is still simple.

People often assume termites are only a spring problem because that is when they see swarmers. The truth is that swarming is just the reproductive stage. The feeding never stops. In the coastal Carolinas, high summer humidity keeps soil moisture high and wood soft, which are ideal conditions for subterranean termites to keep working straight through August.

The signs of an active infestation are easy to miss: faint mud tubes on foundation walls, floors that feel slightly spongy, paint that bubbles, or door frames that stick when they never used to. None of these are dramatic, which is exactly why a trained inspection matters. What looks like a minor house quirk can be the only visible sign of an established colony.

Call Wilkey Services today to schedule an inspection for your property.

Rodents do their planning early. Before the first cool nights of fall push mice and rats to move indoors in force, they spend late summer scouting the outside of your home for gaps, cracks, and easy access points. The work you do in August decides how bad September and October will be.

Wilkey Services handles rodent control and exclusion, which means we do not just address the rodents already inside, we find and close the entry points they rely on. A mouse can slip through a gap the width of a dime, so professional exclusion is what keeps the problem from repeating year after year.

Of all the roaches on the coast, the German cockroach is the one you least want to ignore. It lives indoors year round, but the heat and humidity of a Grand Strand in August speed up its breeding cycle, which means a small problem in July can become a serious one by early fall. These roaches do not move on to somewhere else on their own. Once they are established, they stay.

If you are seeing them in the kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room, that is a sign the population is already growing behind the scenes. This is the point to act, not wait.
