Around this time of year you may notice large, metallic green beetles bumping across the lawn and bouncing off walls and windows.
These are green June beetles, and despite their size and loud, clumsy flight they do not bite or sting, and they pose no danger to people or pets.
The adults feed on ripe and overripe fruit, while their grubs live in the soil and feed on roots, which can thin out patches of turf over time. Seeing a few in a coastal South Carolina summer is normal.
Seeing a lot of them, especially alongside soft or spongy spots in the lawn, can point to a larger grub population underground that is worth having evaluated.
