Ever wonder why we cut into drywall after water damage? 🧐

It’s called a flood cut and it’s an important part of the restoration process.

Floodwater doesn’t always stop where you can see it. Moisture can travel behind walls and become trapped in insulation, framing and other materials.

So we usually remove a section of drywall to check affected areas, improve airflow, and gain access to properly dry the wall cavity and prevent hidden moisture from causing bigger problems later.

Rex Gillim, owner of Best Option Restoration of Lexington has a great story.

Before BOR, Rex was a physical therapist. He spent years in school, earned his doctorate, built a career helping people and by most standards was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing. But he was burnt out and more than anything, he wanted more freedom. Most of all, he is a family man. He wanted to build a life where he had more control over his time and his future and eventually that led him to business ownership with Best Option Restoration.

He's still doing what he's always done: helping people. It just looks a little different today. It takes some guts to walk away from a career you spent years building, but the real risk is the one you don't take, so it's an honor to have Rex in the BOR family and to be a part of what he is building in Lexington.

Not all water damage is the same. The source of the water plays an important role in determining the level of risk, the restoration methods required, and the safety precautions to be taken.

Here's what to do in the event of a flood.

✅ Practice safety first
Don’t assume it’s just water. Floodwater can be contaminated and may introduce bacteria, sewage, chemicals and other hazards into a property.

✅ Shut off all your utilities if it’s safe to do so
Serious hazards can happen in a flood. Electrical wires become loose, which can cause fires and other damage to your home or property.

✅ Keep children and pets away from flooded areas
Children and pets may not recognize these dangers or understand why an area is unsafe. Use barriers or closed doors to prevent access when possible and wait until the area has been properly assessed and cleared before allowing them back.

✅ Don’t try to fix it all by yourself
You may unintentionally spread contamination, damage materials that could be salvaged, or make insurance documentation more difficult.
