Early Crown Glass Windows
We’ve come a long way, baby!

Windows have really evolved since we first started covering wall openings with pieces of parchment. Some of the earliest windows were from Crown Glass. When air was blown through a tube into hot, molten glass, this formed a hollow bowl shape. This glass was then reheated and flattened by spinning the shape on a disk.

The cooled glass disk was cut into various shapes, with the thinnest, finest glass pieces cut from the edges. The glass near the center pontil mark was thicker and more opaque. This center glass became know as bullseye glass for its distinctive center mark. The pieces of glass were fitted together with small triangular shapes mounted in a lattice work pattern to create a solid window sheet for a wall opening.
