Rigid metal is the proper material for the construction of a dryer vent because it has a smooth interior finish that allows lint to easily pass through reducing the buildup of lint. Rigid metal ducts also have a maximum flame-spread index of zero which means the rigid metal is less likely to burn rapidly and spread flames.

Semi-rigid metal pipe is only intended for connecting the dryer vent system to the dryer for transition ducts and should not be used for the entire dryer duct run.

During dryer vent cleaning appointments, Dryer Vent Wizard technicians often see a variety of issues with your dryer vent that can cause problems. To help keep you safer we've compiled a list of "Dryer Vent Don'ts" and can assist you in correcting any problems with your dryer vent system.

DO NOT use vinyl or slinky foil materials for dryer vents.
Dryer vents made from flexible plastic or foil can be easily kinked or crushed, restricting airflow. The ridges in vinyl and slinky materials can also catch excess lint, creating an increased fire risk. If a dryer fire should occur, these materials quickly spread the fire.
DO NOT use PVC piping or plastic materials for dryer vents.
Static in PVC and plastic venting causes lint to stick to the inside of the vent walls which can mix with the expelled water during a typical dry cycle, creating sludge and an increased risk of a fire.
PVC sweats when warm moist air travels through the cool smooth surface causing lint to collect and harden, making cleanings more difficult
PVC takes longer to heat up allowing water to remain in v***r form inside the pipe. The water along with the buildup of lint creates sludge in the vent.
DO NOT use duct tape to connect venting materials.
The adhesive dries out over time, especially due to temperature changes, creating gaps in the joints of the vent.

More than 80% of homes throughout the United States and Canada have clothes dryers. A dryer vent system can contain hidden hazards to the health and safety of your family such as increased risk of a dryer fire and mold and mildew problems. In addition to health and safety concerns, a poorly maintained dryer vent may cause your dryer to run inefficiently. A clothes dryer that is not operating efficiently can cost you money by extending drying time. If you have a dryer in your home or place of business, it’s important to know how to keep your home safe by following safety guidelines and properly maintaining your dryer vent system.
