The fireflies you grew up chasing need three things from your yard. All three are about doing less, not more.

Fireflies communicate through bioluminescent flashes. Each species has a unique pattern — specific frequency, color, and duration. When outdoor lights are on during summer evenings, the flashes get drowned out. Males can't see female responses. Females can't locate males. The entire conversation breaks down.

Their larvae live in the soil for one to two years before becoming adults. They're predators — they eat slugs and snails underground. Lawn pesticides and grub treatments applied at the surface reach the larvae below. One spring application affects a generation that won't become visible for two years. You'd never connect the treatment to the missing fireflies.

They lay eggs in leaf litter and tall grass. Larvae need moist undisturbed soil with ground cover. A fully manicured lawn with no leaves and tight mowed edges doesn't offer anywhere to lay or develop.

Three problems. Three fixes. All of them free.

🌿 How to bring fireflies back:

- Turn off outdoor lights from dusk to midnight during May through August — porch lights, landscape LEDs, and security floods. Even dimming helps, but dark is best
- Skip lawn pesticides and grub treatments, especially in spring — the larvae are in the top inches of soil exactly where the chemicals land
- Leave one corner of your yard unmowed with leaf litter through the season — even a small patch of tall grass and leaves gives them enough habitat to complete the cycle

You're not building anything. You're not buying anything. You're turning things off and leaving things alone.

That's how fireflies come back 🌿
