My husband brought me home a GORGEOUS bouquet of flowers today, and it was so big I decided to split it into two arrangements. How thoughtful! How beautiful! How romantic!
..And that’s how I discovered that I’m apparently allergic to goldenrod.

Nothing says professional horticulturist quite like standing in your own home with swollen, red, itchy hands because a plant decided to fight back.

I spend my days designing landscapes, identifying plants, and telling people what to put in their gardens, only to be personally victimized by a bouquet in my own kitchen.

But look at these arrangements!
Would I do it again? Absolutely.
Will I be wearing gloves next time? Also absolutely

Landscape Designer Field Notes: The Female Ginkgo Tree

While on vacation, I spotted a female Ginkgo biloba tree! Female ginkgos are often avoided or prohibited in certain planting areas because they readily reseed and, more notably, their fruit produces a smell commonly compared to rotten cheese.

This was my first time encountering a female ginkgo with fruit, and naturally, my curiosity got the better of me. I peeled one open to get a whiff, and BOY OH BOY.

“Rotten cheese” is putting it incredibly lightly. I have officially learned that some things in horticulture are better appreciated from a distance.

Will I ever do that again? Absolutely not.

The things we do for science… and by science, I mean an unfortunate personal experience with a tree.🤣🤣🤣

Tip-toe through the tulips? No thanks. 🌷

They’re delicate. They’re dramatic. One wrong move and suddenly you’re apologizing to a flower.

Me? I’d rather galavant through the geraniums. 💜

Perennial geraniums have been a favorite of mine for years, and Rozanne is a superstar. Long-lasting blooms, tough as nails, beautifully sprawling, and deer resistant.
Sounds like a better tune to me. 🎶🌿

Can't see the bridge today but the hardscape on this project is almost complete! There is over 3,500 square feet of pavers on the project, and that doesn't even include the walls.

A little collection of summer. 🌿

I couldn't settle on just one flower this week, so here's a handful of the blooms that have been stealing my attention.

It's moments like these that remind me why I love perennial gardens—they change a little every day, and there's always something new to discover.
Slow down, look closely, and enjoy what's blooming around you. 💚

I am fully embracing my cottage garden era, and honestly, I think the world could use a little more whimsy.

Give me the overflowing flowers. The winding paths. The plants that insist on popping up where they please. The blooms that attract bees, butterflies, and the occasional "What is THAT?" from a passerby.

For so long, gardens were expected to be neat, tidy, and perfectly controlled. But there's something magical about a space that feels alive, a little wild, and full of surprises.

Maybe that's why I'm loving cottage style esthetic so much right now. They're a reminder that beauty doesn't have to be perfectly organized. Sometimes the most memorable gardens are the ones that make you slow down, wander a little, and smile at something unexpected.

Here's to more flowers, more butterflies, and a little more whimsy in the world!
