My name’s Walter. I’m 63. Been a plumber since I was 18. Pipes, drains, boilers—if it carried water, I’ve fixed it. Folks call me ‘Walt the Wrench.’ Never fancied myself a hero, just a man with a toolkit who shows up when something’s leaking.

A few months ago, I got a call from a number I didn’t recognize. Young voice on the other end. ‘Uh… Mr. Walter? My grandma’s sink is flooding… and we can’t pay much.’

I almost said I was booked. But something in her voice—nervous, proud, like she hated asking—made me grab my bag.

When I got there, the kitchen floor was a lake. Her grandma, Mrs. Ramos, stood there in slippers, apologizing in three different ways while trying to mop up. I waved her off. ‘Let me do my job.’

The fix was quick—loose pipe under the sink. Fifteen minutes and a new seal, all sorted. She tried to press a few crumpled bills into my hand. I shook my head. ‘Call it a neighbor’s discount.’

Truth? I left my invoice pad in the van on purpose.

A week later, I found a pie on my porch. No note. Just the smell of apples and cinnamon. Two days later, there were tamales in a covered dish. Then, word got out.

Turns out Mrs. Ramos tells everyone. I start getting calls—not for big jobs, but for little fixes. A dripping faucet for the widower down the block. A clogged shower drain at the daycare. Loose handles at the church. Half the time, they try to pay me in cookies, stew, or fresh bread. I take it every time.

One rainy Tuesday, the daycare called again. Not for repairs. ‘Walt… could you come read to the kids? We told them the plumber might have a story.’

I sat there in my overalls, reading The Little Engine That Could to 12 squirmy toddlers, and one of them—cheeks full of crackers—said, ‘Mr. Walt, you fix stuff and make it work again… like you fixed my swing.’

I didn’t even know I’d done it—they’d mentioned it creaked, so I tightened a few bolts last time. But to that kid, I wasn’t just a plumber. I was someone who made things better.

Now, every Friday after work, I stop by the daycare. I fix a thing or two, read a story, take home a piece of artwork with ‘WALT’ scrawled in crayon. My fridge is covered in them.

Plumbing doesn’t make headlines. Nobody throws parades for the guy who unclogs your sink. But here’s what I’ve learned: every job is about people first, pipes second.

Because sometimes the biggest leak isn’t in a faucet—it’s in someone’s faith that the world will show up for them. And that’s a job worth fixing, every single time.”

The ugly things nobody talks about as small business owners:

•You are fully dependent on yourself to pay your bills and when you are in the first 2-5 years it’s real dicey.

•There’s no salary, no benefits, no insurance, no weekends off, no sick days, no taking the day off when you don’t have childcare, no ever being “done”…ever.

•Consistent help with young kids is humanly impossible and when you don’t have it it’s an absolute hot mess. Hot. Stinking. Mess. Like take 6 months to open your shop hot mess.

•Social media does not support small businesses. In fact they’ve made it 10x harder (not an exaggeration) to build and grow now. We work twice as hard for a quarter of the reach.

•Once you force yourself to hire employees (because you can’t do it all)…you pay them before you pay yourself.

•Small business loans aren’t for small businesses

•People will think you’re a millionaire because you make sales and “look successful” when you’re barely a $2-aire because you have to reinvest every single dollar for the first few years.

•You feel like you’re letting down almost everyone in your life because there’s not enough of you to go around.

•Some days feel really really lonely

•Opening a shop and trying to keep your ecommerce biz alive during a “challenging financial climate” is for the dang birds. The. Dang. Birds.

•The weight of peoples expectations on you feel really heavy sometimes. They’re quick to let you know how you’re falling short

•You work 365 days a year and 16 hours a day

•It takes 47 days to respond to texts, messages and emails even if the answer is “ok”

•You watch people doing huge things around you and you have to keep your peace and stay focused and not allow comparison to creep in

•You’re desperate for a vacation butttt the whole $2-aire thing 🤦🏼‍♀️

•Some days I cry…but oddly enough, I never want to quit.

…BUT you keep going day in and day out because you believe in what you’re doing with all of your heart. It’s a deep knowing. Because it calls you and because you believe you’re building the foundation for something beautiful. This is the stuff nobody wants to talk about or push through but in the end I know we will look back and know we helped pave the path for our girls and others with big dreams!

And just to be extra honest, I’m not sharing this for pity at all but it’s been a rough year and sometimes it helps to lay it all out. I’m not an internalizer 🤣 This isn’t an easy journey and it gets exhausting waking up to a new hurdle every single day. I know it’ll be ok and I know we are on the right path, but your friends are tired…so tired lol •••> Also, if you know any other small business owners please know that this translates to them as well and give them so much grace…and a hug and maybe some wine or a cookie lol…

A day in the Life of a Plumber…

(1) “Are you guys busy?” -Yeah we haven’t slowed down in 2 years like everyoneee else…

(2) “Why does *item* cost so much???”

-Like everything else…the cost of goods and fuel have skyrocketed… ya think we weren’t affected?

(3) “If you have some time….”

Let’s just stop right there…what time do you think I have after I‘ve heard that phrase and “Could you fit me in?” all week???!

(4) “You picked the right trade to be in young man….Plumbers make a killing!”

-Gets Bill-

“Could you give me a friends and family discount?!”

🙄Smh… sure thing! Pay my supply bills for me first!!!

(5) “My water heater is only a couple years old… I don’t think that it’s beyond repair…I just got it!!!”

-Checks serial number- 14 years old…. Life must go by quick for you…

And then you get the people that scream “But my last heater lasted 25 years!!!!”

- Good for you! Guess what you’re “new” one lasted 14…Welcome to the new world…cheaper products and unskilled workers combined with a throwaway society. Nothing lasts forever.

(6) “Why does the job cost more on a weekend then a weekday?”

-Well you see, I kind of want to enjoy life outside of work…, but that’s the cost for me to ruin my weekend and cancel all my plans to help you with your issues…

(7) “ So and so can do the same job you came and looked at for cheaper… can you match that?.. I’d really like to give you the work…

- Sorry, but no. My price for my kind of work done by ME. You pay for what you get... If you really wanted to be loyal give me the work…you’d accept my cost of doing business.

(8) “You must never solder anymore…everything is all propress or pex now…”

-Listen buddy I use everything. There is a certain application for it all. Some areas can’t be pressed…so i solder…some areas can’t be soldered… so i press… some areas won’t work for both so I resort to pex or another suitable connection…

(9) “”What do you think about this “new” PEX they call?”” -Get away from me

(10) “Yunno, I would do this myself, but I just don’t have the time” *stands there and watches me the whole entire time*

- Wanna do my job for me? Why did you call me? Don’t waste my time or question my judgements. I didn’t put 8000hrs into this trade to get my license to be told what I should be doing…Some people man…

Just smile and bite your lip…

Thank you to all of my loyal customers “Family “.

The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business.
Running a business is really hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people.
People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.
Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.
You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.
Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a husband or a wife, family support, friend...
There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5-10 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.
Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!
I copied this from another small business owner that I support.
Thanks for posting Tyler lathom
