In light of the increased power outages, (and you are a South Central Power Company member) there is an easy DIY solution for getting basic power needs inside your home. If you have a gas / propane furnace, you will have heat. Electric furnaces are way too powerful for this set up. However, look into a ventless propane / natural gas wall heater. There is no power needed unless you have a fan mount to move heat. You can get up to 50 amps of power for basics. Here is how it works:
South Central offers Generlink meters. You simply plug your (must be SC approved generator) generator into the meter and you can power select circuits inside your home. Basic load management will keep you out of the dark and basic needs met. If you do not have a portable generator with a 50 amp plug, look at the Duromax 13000 on Amazon. It is a dual fuel (propane and gasoline) generator. If you run out of gasoline, you can connect your gas grill tank to it. Its a good product. We have been working on this test pilot program for about a year. We can also assist with load management. No discrepancies have occurred to date. The only issue is the customer tries to run way too much and the generator shuts down. Out the door costs including generator is on average $3,500.00. A home automatic standby generator is on average $16,500.00. This is an affordable DIY option. You will need a special cord that is also sold on the South Central website. (link below)

As the winter weather approaches, it is time to re-visit maintaining your backup generator. No matter if you have a home standby automatic generator or a portable, it is imperative to follow the manufacturers recommended operation guidelines.

Operations during a power outage (Home Standby or Portable)

After 24 hrs of continuous use, turn off the breaker on generator and allow to run for 5 minutes. This is considered a “cool down” period.

1. Check oil level. Add oil if needed but do not overfill. This will result in oil saturation at the air filter.
2. Verify that oil fill cap is tight (turn clockwise)
3. Verify that the air filter latches are secure and the lid is closed correctly.
4. Look for oil accumulation on the enclosure or on the ground.
5. After 15-20 minutes, restart the generator and allow to warm up (with the generator breaker in the off (open) position. Once the generator has warmed up (2 minutes), turn the breaker on (closed) position.

Preventative Maintenance:

1. Generac recommends service after 100 hours of run time or once a year. Run time hours are the common rule of thumb if you live in an area that experiences common power outages.

2. Generac Home Standby generators do not test / exercise under load. This may cause your oil to appear “milky” due to condensation buildup in the crank case. Every 90 days you should run the generator under load to reduce the condensation buildup.

You can easily do this by turning off (opening) the transfer switch main breaker. The generator will begin the countdown to start process, start, and transfer the house to generator power. This is also good practice to be sure that your generator will operate during an actual power outage. If you have questions regarding this, please feel free to contact our office at 740-385-8624.

Things you should keep on hand

1. 5W-30 synthetic or synthetic blend oil (2 quarts)
2. Preventative maintenance kit (Air filter, oil filter, spark plugs)
3. Low oil pressure switch
4. 26R battery (Generac Home Standby) if your battery is 3 or more years old.

Please remember that your generator is imperative to your comfort and convenience during a power outage. Many generator service providers are limited to parts availability during large power outages. This is why we recommend that you carry a small list of items on hand. In the event of your generator shutting down (faulting out), please advise your service provider of the parts you have on hand.

We can assist with any Generac parts or materials you may need to stock. Please call 740-385-8624
