Last week, we celebrated an incredible milestone for one of our employees - Jon Johnson's 40th anniversary with Twining!

Jon joined us in 1986 as a Capper at our Santa Ana Lab, and today he's a valued member of our Long Beach Lab team. Four decades of dedication, hard work, and expertise. Thank you, Jon, for everything you've brought to our team! πŸ‘

A roof leak almost never starts where the stain is.

Water travels. It runs along a deck, follows a seam, and shows up three bays away from the actual breach, which is why our Building Envelope team uses electronic leak detection (ASTM D7877) instead of guessing. Current crosses the membrane, and the fault lights up exactly where it is.

That's one piece of what this division does. The rest: water infiltration and air leakage testing, full-scale performance mock-ups, WRB and flashing inspections, sealant adhesion, anchor pull and proof-load testing, and forensic investigations when a building needs an honest answer.

Did you know Twining did this? Every mile of pavement has a lab behind it.

Two of the tests that make roads last:

πŸ”₯ The ignition oven β€” we burn an asphalt sample at extreme heat to measure exactly how much binder (the "glue") is in the mix. Too little and the road unravels; too much and it ruts.

πŸ§ͺ The Rice test β€” measures the theoretical maximum density of an asphalt mix, the benchmark inspectors use to verify compaction out on the roadway.

Next time you're on a smooth stretch of highway, there's a good chance samples of it went through an oven and a vacuum chamber first.

Did you know California law requires balcony inspections?

After a tragic balcony collapse in Berkeley, California passed two laws β€” often called the "Balcony Bills" β€” requiring regular inspection of exterior elevated elements like balconies, decks, stairs, and walkways:

β€’ SB 721 β€” apartment buildings with 3+ units, inspected every 6 years
β€’ SB 326 β€” condominiums and HOA communities, inspected every 9 years

The goal isn't paperwork β€” it's catching hidden water damage and wood rot before they become structural failures. An early repair costs a fraction of an emergency one, and it can extend the life of the building.

If you own or manage multifamily property in California, it's worth knowing where your building stands in its inspection cycle.

Did you know Twining did this? We break concrete on purpose β€” thousands of times a year.

When concrete is poured on a job site, technicians cast extra cylinders from the same batch. Those cylinders come back to our lab, cure under controlled conditions, and then get loaded in a compression machine until they fail.

Why destroy them? Because that break tells us the exact strength of the concrete in the structure β€” and whether it meets what the engineers designed for (per ASTM C39).

That satisfying crack you hear in this video? That's verification the building above it is safe.

What lab test should we show next? πŸ‘‡

Not everyone could make it to the in-person women's panel, and honestly, we get it. Life is busy.

The good news is that the conversation didn't stay in the room. Watch our Women in AEC panel on demand, anytime.

Happy International Women in Engineering Day!

We don't say this enough in the AEC industry:

It is hard to be the only woman in the room. It has always been hard. And the women who chose this industry anyway, who showed up, proved themselves, deserve to be recognized.

Not just once a year. But today especially.

And today, Building Connections releases its first-ever in-person panel episode, filmed in front of a live audience in Long Beach, with five women who didn't just build careers in AEC. They changed what's possible in it.

We asked them real questions. They gave us real answers.
