Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference and make your home more functional.

One of the things we encourage homeowners to think about during the planning stages is outlet placement. And we're not just talking about the standard outlets required by building codes. We're talking about those unexpected places where having an outlet can make everyday life SO much easier!

⚡ 10 OUTLET LOCATIONS YOU MAY NOT HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT:

Inside closets – Perfect for charging cordless vacuums, steamers, and other rechargeable devices.

Inside the pantry – Great for small appliances you want to keep plugged in but out of sight.

Near the toilet – Planning for a bidet? An outlet nearby can save you a headache later.

In the mudroom – Think charging stations for phones, backpacks, cordless tools, and other everyday essentials.

Above the washer and dryer – Convenient for ironing, steamers, and other laundry accessories.

In hallways – Perfect for nightlights, seasonal decorations, or a beautifully lit console table.

Inside bathroom cabinets and drawers – Keep electric toothbrushes, hair tools, and other devices charged without cluttering your countertops.

In the living room floor – Have a floating sofa or furniture arrangement? A floor outlet eliminates the need for extension cords running across the room.

Outside and under the eaves – Think Christmas lights, landscape lighting, outdoor entertaining, and seasonal decorations.

In the garage – Even if you don't own an electric vehicle today, planning for a future EV charging station is worth considering!

💡 HERE'S WHY THIS MATTERS:

The best time to plan these details is BEFORE the electrical rough-in is completed and the walls are closed up.

Adding an outlet during construction is typically much easier and less expensive than coming back later to cut into finished walls, run additional wiring, and repair drywall and paint.

🏡 The difference is in the details.

Building a custom home isn’t just about following a set of plans. It’s about understanding how every decision made during construction affects the finished home.

Take a kitchen pass-through window overlooking an outdoor living area. When designed correctly, the window sits directly behind the kitchen sink and flush with the countertops, creating a seamless pass-through from the kitchen to the back porch. It’s beautiful, functional, and perfect for entertaining.

But that finished look starts long before the countertops ever arrive.

During framing, the window opening has to be set at the correct height to account for the cabinets, countertops, window dimensions, and the final design. Get that measurement wrong, and you could be looking at reframing, construction delays, changes to cabinetry or countertops—or losing that seamless pass-through design altogether.

These are the details we pay attention to.

This week, we’ve been carefully reviewing this exact feature on one of our custom builds—making sure our framer has the precise measurements needed and understands the end goal before the window opening is framed.

Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001—a day that forever changed our nation.

We remember the lives that were lost, the families who were forever changed, and the first responders and everyday Americans who showed extraordinary courage and selflessness in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

At East Texas Homes, we believe a home is so much more than walls and a roof. It’s where families gather, where memories are made, and where we find comfort and belonging. Today is a reminder of just how precious those things are.

Twenty-five years later, we honor those we lost, those who ran toward danger to help others, and the strength and unity shown by Americans in the days that followed.
