Welded steel framing offers unmatched durability, but finishing it out as a home takes a specific approach. Here are the top DOs and DON’Ts to keep your project on budget and up to code:
DO:
✅ Spray foam insulate: Closed-cell spray foam is essential to prevent condensation on steel and stop thermal bridging.
✅ Frame interior walls: Build an independent wood or steel stud frame inside the shell to easily run electrical/plumbing and hang drywall.
✅ Engineer for residential loads: Ensure footings, slabs, and framing are engineered for living space weight (drywall, lofts, cabinets), not just basic storage.
✅ Plan openings early: Frame out headers and flashing for windows and doors before exterior metal siding goes up.
DON’T:
❌ Attach drywall directly to main steel: Steel expands and contracts—attaching sheetrock directly causes popped screws and cracked seams.
❌ Skip the under-slab v***r barrier: Moisture will migrate up through concrete and ruin your interior flooring.
❌ Ignore residential codes: Verify septic sizing, residential setbacks, and energy compliance before you start building.
❌ Guess on HVAC: Tight, spray-foamed steel buildings need properly sized HVAC and fresh-air ventilation (ERV) to prevent indoor humidity.

Not bad for a day and half of work!!Our crew is knocking this 80’X50’X28’ PreFab building out for one of our great repeat customers. This building is designed to have a 10 ton overhead bridge crane and has expandable end wall frames.
