šŸ See maples turning yellow all over Central Arkansas right now? That’s not fall color. That’s stress.

Autumn Blaze maples, and similar red/silver maple hybrids, have become incredibly popular in new developments because they’re inexpensive, grow fast, and look great when they’re young.

But fast growth doesn’t always equal a good long-term tree.

In our Central Arkansas soils and climate, we commonly see these trees struggle with girdling roots, poor structure, nutrient deficiencies, trunk damage, drought and heat stress, and premature decline.

And there’s another problem: people plant way too many of them.

Drive through some newer neighborhoods and nearly every tree along the street is the same species or cultivar. History has taught us what happens when we build an urban forest around one kind of tree. One serious pest or disease can change an entire neighborhood.

A tree shouldn’t just be selected because it grows fast and looks good for the first 10–15 years.

🌳 The goal is a tree that can still be providing shade, stormwater management, wildlife habitat, energy savings, and property value 50–100 years from now.

Plant the right tree in the right place.
Plant for diversity.
Plant for the next generation.

That’s stewardship.

It’s always been about the team.

The equipment has changed. The jobs have changed. And a whole lot of faces have changed over the years.

But one thing hasn’t.

I’ve never built anything worthwhile in this industry by myself.

Looking back through these pictures reminded me just how many good people have worked beside me over the years. Some for a season. Some for years. Every one of those teams played a part in getting us where we are today.

And I’m especially thankful for the crew we have right now.

We’re still growing, still learning each other and still getting better—but I truly believe this group has the potential to become one of the best crews I’ve ever put together.

That’s why Teamwork is one of Treegorilla’s five Core Values.

Safety • Integrity • Stewardship • Teamwork • Expertise

To everyone who has been part of one of these crews over the years—and especially the guys carrying it forward today:

Thank you. And good hustle. šŸ¦šŸŒ³

There’s a big difference between getting a tree on the ground and taking care of a tree, a property, and the people around it the right way.

Experience. Expertise. Safety. Property protection. The right equipment and knowing when and how to use it.

Those things may not always show up as individual lines on an estimate, but they’re a big part of what you’re actually paying for when you hire a professional tree care company.

At Treegorilla, our goal isn’t to find the cheapest way to get limbs on the ground. It’s to find the right way to take care of your trees and your property. šŸ¦šŸŒ³

Can it be saved? Here’s what I found!

Yesterday I introduced you to this old post oak and the homeowner’s hope that it could be preserved.

After completing my assessment, I’m cautiously optimistic that it can. 🌳

The tree is showing good overall health and vigor—but healthy doesn’t mean risk-free.

There is a history of significant pruning and large limb loss, the tree sits at the top of a hill between two homes, and vines around the trunk prevented me from completely inspecting the root flare.

So my recommendation wasn’t ā€œcut it down.ā€

But it also wasn’t ā€œdon’t worry about it.ā€

The next step is to expose and thoroughly inspect the root flare, address dead, damaged and declining portions of the canopy, and then carefully manage this mature post oak going forward.

That’s an important part of professional tree care: understanding what we know, being honest about what we don’t know, and determining the next right thing.

That’s Integrity too. šŸ¦šŸŒ³

šŸŒ³šŸ¦ Can this old Post Oak be saved?

A homeowner called me out to assess this very old post oak hoping I could tell her it could be saved.

I was hoping for the same thing.

But when you’re responsible for giving someone professional advice about a tree that could impact their home and family, what they want to hear can’t determine what you tell them.

Our responsibility isn’t to recommend the work that creates the biggest invoice—or simply agree to do whatever someone is willing to pay us to do.

It’s to look at the evidence, explain what we find, and recommend what we believe is right for the tree, the property, and the people around it.

That’s why this tree seemed like the perfect place to talk about one of Treegorilla’s five Core Values:

Integrity.

Safety • Integrity • Stewardship • Teamwork • Expertise

So…can this old post oak be saved?

I’ll show you what I found tomorrow. šŸ¦šŸŒ³

šŸŒ³šŸ¦ MEET THE CREW
Brian Siler — CREW LEADER

There’s a whole lot more to running a Treegorilla crew than just knowing how to run a chainsaw.

Meet Brian, one of the guys we trust to lead our crew, communicate with our clients, operate some pretty serious equipment, and help make sure the job gets done the right way.

Brian brings a unique range of experience to Treegorilla. During his years in the tree industry, he’s operated everything from a knuckle-boom crane equipped with a grapple saw to a hydraulic telescopic-boom crane to bucket trucks, stump grinders, skid steers, to grapple trucks and more. He holds a CDL, is an excellent equipment operator, and has the kind of practical experience that’s hard to teach in a classroom.

And he’s not finished learning.

Brian is currently studying and preparing to sit for his ISA Certified Arborist exam, continuing to build the science and arboricultural knowledge behind the years of practical experience he already brings to the job.

But some of what makes Brian such an important part of our team has nothing to do with trees.

He has spent more than 20 years in the fire service, and he helped his father build the Wilburn Volunteer Fire Department. That history of service, teamwork, and responsibility carries over into the way he approaches our work every day.

He’s a team player. Our guys enjoy working with him. He’s great with our clients. And when there’s a complicated job in front of us, he’s one of the people we’re glad to have standing there figuring it out with us.

Over the next several weeks, we’re going to introduce you to more of the people behind Treegorilla and the five Core Values that guide how we work:

Safety • Integrity • Stewardship • Teamwork • Expertise

We’re proud of the equipment we own and the work we’re capable of doing.

But we’re even more proud of the people behind it.

Good hustle, Brian. šŸ¦šŸŒ³ā¤ļø
