Hoping all you guys made it and are doing well through this weather!
If you are concerned for your plants as well, be sure to check on them and give them a drink of water.
I know you are probably thinking "are you crazy?!? they just got 2 feet of snow!!!"
I may be off my rocker about other things but trust me with this one. (or keep reading for the scientific reasoning) ;)
The ground has been full of snow and it may seem counterintuitive to water. But imagine being out in the snow without gloves on and then putting your hands under cold water. Even though it is cold water, it's still warmer than what your hands are at that point.
1. The water will help them to warm any remaining ice within the plant and mobilize water throughout the plants again. When a freeze occurs, the plants water within it become ice crystals and expand and eventually stop moving the water throughout the plant.
2. The dry winds of winter can cause quicker evapotranspiration (big word for "plant sweat") so you may have less water in the plant than normal. In the winter, this would be closer to a couple times a month depending on rainfall, wind, etc.
If there is another freeze, be sure to water your plants early so they can take in the water and be rigid and moving throughout the plant when the freeze happens. Cover with a light sheet or plastic and be sure to remove any cover immediately the next morning so the ground and plant foliage can warm up sooner.
