Placerita Canyon is a great place to see Southern California ecosystems up close. From Western Sycamores along the creek to oak trees on the slopes, mistletoe overhead, and birds like scrub jays and woodpeckers moving through the canopy, the canyon offers a wide range of plant and wildlife interactions in a relatively small space.

These photos highlight just a few of the species and habitats you can observe here throughout the year. Slowing down to notice these details helps build a better understanding of how local ecosystems function and why places like Placerita Canyon matter.

I’ll be leading guided environmental hikes with LA County Parks and Recreation at Placerita Canyon on select Saturdays and Sundays. Registration is available at reservations.lacounty.gov.

May Canyon has been part of my life since high school, a place I’ve returned to again and again without fully realizing how much was growing, changing, and thriving around me. Over the years, the canyon has taught me to slow down, to pay attention, and to see the details that make this landscape alive: new growth after the rains, seasonal flowers tucked between rocks, wide views opening into the valley, and the wildlife that moves quietly through it all.

The more time I spend here, the more I notice how much biodiversity is present in what many people think of as dry hills. Every visit is a reminder that these ecosystems are resilient, complex, and deserving of care and attention. I hope these photos encourage you to look at familiar places with a different lens. There is always more to notice, more to learn, and more to appreciate. 🌿✨

If you’d like to explore May Canyon with me, I’m hosting a guided hike on Sunday, December 14th at 9 a.m. πŸ₯Ύβ›°οΈ

🌿✨ Community on the Trail 🌞

Our May Canyon hike was a beautiful morning of learning, mindfulness, and connection. πŸ’š We explored local native plants, noticed subtle changes in the landscape, and took time to slow down and be present in nature together.

Participants shared how much they valued the educational moments, guided structure, and opportunities for reflection β€” all reminders of why this work feels so meaningful. 🌎
