New Home, New Security Plan: Don't Reuse Someone Else's Camera Setup
Just moved into a new home? Before you rely on the existing security cameras, make sure the system is truly yours and working properly.
The previous homeowner may have left cameras, an NVR or DVR recorder, and existing wiring behind. But do you have access to the recordings? Are the passwords secure? Are the cameras covering the areas you need?
At Digital Surveillance, we help Orange County homeowners assess their existing surveillance systems and plan security coverage that fits their new property.
Here are five things to check before relying on inherited cameras:
1. Check Recorder Access
Make sure you can access the NVR or DVR and review recorded footage.
2. Secure Your Passwords
Change default or previous-owner credentials, update remote access accounts, and remove access that should no longer be authorized.
3. Test Every Camera
Confirm that each camera is online, recording properly, and delivering usable video.
4. Review Recording Settings
Check storage capacity, recording schedules, timestamps, and how long footage is retained.
5. Identify Coverage Gaps
Review your driveway, front entrance, side gates, garage doors, and backyard to see whether the existing camera positions still make sense.
A new home deserves a security plan built around you, not the previous owner's needs.
