🎓 LS1 UNIVERSITY: Fiber Reflection

Why would light travel backward through a fiber?

A small amount of reflected light can give our technicians valuable clues about what’s happening along a fiber run. Using tools like an OTDR, our team can help locate events, identify areas that may need attention, and interpret what the returning light is telling us.

Not every reflection means there’s a problem. What matters is the amount, location, and overall test results — which is why proper testing, inspection, and technician experience matter.

💙💛 LS1 Gives Back

21 isn’t extra. It’s extraordinary.

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and we’re proud to support the Burger Family Foundation.

Inspired by Jake and Ashlyn Burger’s daughter, Penelope, the Foundation is creating meaningful opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families through financial assistance, therapy, community, education, advocacy, and more.

We’re honored to support a mission centered on opportunity, belonging, and helping families thrive. ❤️

🎓 LS1 UNIVERSITY: What’s a fiber bend, and why does it matter?

A fiber cable doesn’t have to be broken to cause signal loss. Even a bend that’s too tight can affect how efficiently light travels through the fiber.

Swipe through for a quick look at bend loss, where it can happen, and how technicians use OTDR testing to help identify the problem.

🎓 LS1 UNIVERSITY: How do two separate pieces of fiber become one?

The connection is called a splice.

Fusion splicing joins two glass fibers together to create a low-loss optical connection that allows light to keep traveling through the network.

Swipe through to see what a splice is, how fusion splicing works, why precision matters, and how testing helps verify the connection is performing as expected.

LS1 UNIVERSITY: How can light show us where a fiber problem is?

An OTDR helps technicians see what is happening inside a fiber-optic cable without opening the cable or inspecting its entire
route.

The OTDR connects to one end of the fiber and sends a short pulse of light through the glass strand. As the light travels, tiny amounts return to the tester. The OTDR measures that returning light and creates a map showing the fiber’s length, light loss, and approximately where different events occur.

Four common events it may show are:
🎓 SPLICE — Two fibers joined together
🎓 BEND — A tight curve causing some light to escape
🎓 REFLECTION — Some light bouncing back toward the tester
🎓 BREAK — The light’s path being interrupted
An OTDR does more than tell us that something happened. It helps show approximately where it happened so the technician knows where to investigate.

Simply put: The OTDR sends in light, reads what comes back, and creates a map of the fiber.

🎓 LS1 UNIVERSITY: OTDR vs. Power Meter Testing

Both tests check fiber—but they answer two different questions.

🔍 OTDR: “Where is the problem?”

An OTDR sends a pulse of light through the fiber and creates a map of the cable.

It can help locate:
• Splices
• Sharp bends
• Bad connections
• Breaks or damaged areas
• The end of the fiber

It also tells us approximately how far away each point is.

Think of an OTDR as a map that helps us find where something happened.

💡 POWER METER: “How much light made it through?”

A light source is connected at one end of the fiber, and a power meter is connected at the other.

The light source sends light through the cable. The meter measures how much light reaches the other end and how much was lost along the way.

Think of it like sending water through a hose and measuring how much comes out the other side.

✅ WHY USE BOTH?

The OTDR helps show where a problem may be.
The power meter measures how well the complete fiber connection carries light.

One gives us the map. The other gives us the final measurement. Together, they give us a more complete picture.
