A Los Angeles project that still holds up, circa 2018.
This circa-1940 post-and-beam home kept its best bones, the tongue-and-groove paneling and the exposed ceiling joists, while the layout got reworked for how the family actually lives. Board-and-batten walls carry bold color from room to room, from the deep black-blue dining room to the blush library built right into the gable. Green checkerboard and crisp white painted floors tie it together, and the steel bifold doors open the living space straight onto the deck for real indoor-outdoor living.
Years later it still reads exactly as intended, which is the whole point of building it right the first time.
