5 Common Air Conditioner Problems
There’s nothing worse than having air conditioning issues on hot muggy days. When problems arise, the causes can run the gamut. It can be something as simple as a blown fuse or needing a filter replacement, to more serious complications that require professional help such as refrigerant leak. The most common causes for air conditioning problems usually derive from maintenance neglect and improper installation. Frequent simple maintenance care is critical to having an optimally running air conditioning system. The benefits outweigh the risks and can save owners time and money, while lengthening the life expectancy of their systems.
#1 Filthy filters
Not cleaning or replacing the filters when necessary causes restricted airflow. Clogged filters prevent proper airflow, decreasing the systems efficiency and ability to cool adequately. it causes the systems to work harder and expend more energy. Since systems vary, make sure to follow manufacturer guidelines for your specific system in terms of how often to replace them. If not sure, a good rule of thumb is if light cannot pass it, it’s time to replace it. It’s a good idea to set an alert notifying you when it’s time to replace the filter to keep your system running smoothly and as intended.
#2 Improper sealing
Pay close attention to the area around your unit especially window units. If not sealed properly, hot air can get in or cold air can get out. This is usually a result of improper sealing during installation. To maximize efficiency and air conditioner effectiveness, make sure insulation panels are used and installed properly. Also, check that the unit is properly sealed using manufacturer installation guide and materials. Inspect all windows and doors to make sure there are no drafts coming in. If additional sealing is needed, weather stripping may be necessary.
#3 Uneven cooling
Uneven temperatures can be a result of clogged or blocked vents or registers. Check that the airflow is unobstructed and clean frequently to ensure proper air flow and even distribution. Faulty duct installation or leaking ducts can also cause uneven cooling. Check to see that the registers are opened and unobstructed in rooms that feel warm.
#4 System is working, but not cooling
This could be a refrigerant leak, and if so, it’s a job for a professional technician as it can be toxic if not handled appropriately. It is not advised to refill refrigerant yourself. This is a particular process that must match the manufacturer's specification exactly as stated in order for your system to run efficiently. If the system is under or overcharged, it will not run effectively.
#5 It’s not turning on
There are various reasons your air conditioner may not turn on. One of the first things to do is check your circuit breakers and system shutoff switch to make sure they’re on. Faulty wiring can also be possible, which can be a fire hazard and extremely dangerous. If there are any signs of faulty wiring, consult a technician immediately.
