AC Martin Inc.

AC Martin Inc. AC Martin is a California based architecture, planning, interior architecture and research firm that Our culture is a balance of art and business.

While the same principle that guided us in creating historic Los Angeles landmarks still informs us on each and every project we undertake—to create enduring environments that affect people's lives in a positive way—AC Martin's approach is constantly evolving and growing. Architecture has changed exponentially since our inception in 1906; the ever-increasing pace of technology means that our indus

try is in a constant state of flux. AC Martin's priority is to be at the forefront with an approach that is sustainable, technologically advanced, informed by research and pushes the boundaries of design. Having a bright and collaborative environment is important at AC Martin. With only one office in downtown Los Angeles we create a single hub of activity. On a daily basis you can see interns mingle with senior designers and clients; internal accomplishments and awards posted in the kitchen; a lunchtime watercolor class; or a project team in the studio pinning inspirational images. Here in this space, excellent design is nurtured and opposite viewpoints are welcomed in an effort to promote innovative design. We have a very diverse group of designers with different professional backgrounds who can offer alternative strategies for problem solving. By promoting innovation, discovery, and communication, while embracing the firm's traditions, history and accomplishments, we have created a distinct personality in the industry.

Future-ready libraries are built on a foundation of user experience that specifically addresses the convergent challenges of loneliness, neurodiversity, and intergenerational disconnection. Beyond basic accessibility, they create environments where everyone feels welcomed and empowered across neurotype or age. This can be achieved by incorporating neuro-inclusive design elements such as sensory gradients throughout the library where space transitions from high-energy collaborative areas to calm, low-stimulation zones. Intergenerational programming integration creates shared learning spaces where different generations naturally exchange knowledge—from makerspaces where teens can teach older adults technology to storytelling areas where wisdom flows in multiple directions.

Libraries serve as civic anchors and platforms for cultural and civic engagement. In increasingly diverse communities, libraries serve as vital cultural commons—spaces where multiple heritages are celebrated and meaningful dialogue around pressing social and community issues is fostered. As accessible and trusted institutions, libraries provide neutral ground for collective engagement, offering voter education sessions, public forums, and exhibits that encourage informed participation. By curating local stories and hosting conversations that bridge global perspectives with community experiences, libraries play a pivotal role in strengthening social cohesion, rebuilding civic trust, and fostering mutual understanding. An essential aspect of this work is creating spaces that reflect the values and aspirations of the communities they serve.

This Earth Month, we are featuring AC Martin-designed sustainable projects. The Zero Net Energy Behavioral and Social Sciences Building at Chico State is a 94,000-GSF sustainable, student-centered academic hub. From project inception, Zero Net Energy was a guiding requirement—realized through a 27,000-SF rooftop photovoltaic array, high-performance glazing, a dedicated outdoor air system, and an efficient envelope that reduces heat gain and energy use. Material choices reflect Chico State’s vernacular and sustainability goals: traditional campus brick is paired with durable, low-maintenance wood-look cladding made from rice husks. The design maximizes solar orientation, respects Chico Creek setbacks, and integrates fire access considerations, all while fostering health and wellness through biophilic design and visual connections to the tree canopy. As a model of resilient, high-performance design, the Behavioral and Social Sciences Building embodies Chico State’s commitment to sustainability, equity, and student success—serving as both a functional academic resource and an inspiring symbol of environmental stewardship.

The first residential and retail development at SDSU Mission Valley and currently under construction, Avalon Mission Valley thoughtfully reimagines its site as a connective tissue between and the future River Park — not just a building, but a catalyst for movement, engagement, and everyday life.

Its massing and geometry are intentionally composed to frame views, activate open spaces, and draw people through the site — inviting pedestrians and cyclists alike to engage with the dynamic public realm.
By orienting the architecture toward the stadium’s energy and the serenity of the riverfront parkland, the design strengthens the connection between campus life, recreation, and community.

This Black History Month, we celebrate the legacy of leaders, scholars, and change-makers whose contributions continue to shape our communities.

At the Mervyn M. Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute at CSU Dominguez Hills, architecture will serve as a platform for dialogue, research, and civic engagement. Named in honor of civil rights leader and former California Lieutenant Governor Mervyn Dymally, the Institute advances scholarship focused on public policy, social justice, and the global African diaspora.

AC Martin is honored to have designed this important building in support of the Institute’s vital work—creating a welcoming, light-filled environment that will foster learning, reflection, and community gathering. The design reinforces the building’s mission: to cultivate inclusive conversations, celebrate cultural heritage, and empower future leaders. A groundbreaking ceremony for the building took place in December 2025.

This month—and every month—we recognize the power of place in advancing equity, education, and opportunity.

The Resources Building Renovation for the California Department of General Services consists of the comprehensive renovation of the original Resources Building at 1416 9th Street in Sacramento. The existing building is 17 stories and roughly 657,000 GSF. Utilizing a progressive design-build delivery method, the Turner + AC Martin + HGA Team’s approach addressed the State’s Goals and Critical Success Factors as fundamental touch points to ensure a project that brings the highest value and differentiates itself yet honors the significance of the original International Style building.

The renovation included the demolition of the existing building’s non-structural elements and a thorough abatement of materials. The fundamental massing of the building remained unchanged. The intervention introduced a new energy-efficient skin, with an orchestrated pattern of glass spandrel panels that recall the metaphor of the original façade.

The decorative open graphic on the East and West façade has been reinterpreted with vertical fins in an alternating light and dark pattern. The podium elevations are finished with a gradient pattern of glazed brick to enliven the pedestrian experience and support the City’s initiatives for the O Street corridor. The design of the office workplace is modern and flexible to facilitate collaboration and productivity while adaptable to change in the post-pandemic world. Sustainability was a priority, and the project is on track to achieve LEED Platinum certification and targets Carbon Neutrality and Zero Net Energy.
