New study from Harvard underscores the importance of immigrant labor in the construction industry. Not that you needed a study to prove it if you spend any time at construction sites. Turns out that the Dallas Fort Worth area has one of the highest proportions of immigrant labor - 61% of the workforce. Labor shortages from their removal will definitely impact our ability to build new housing. https://www.proremodeler.com/home/news/55342023/study-immigrant-labor-critical-to-homebuilding-and-remodeling-in-major-us-metro-areas?o_eid=5306E8986723A3J&oly_enc_id=5306E8986723A3J&rdx.ident[pull]=omeda|5306E8986723A3J&utm_campaign=CPS260112021&utm_medium=email&utm_source=PREM+Field+Report

Fascinating article about using whole trees for structural members (rather than milling them into precise building shapes). Apparently, “When you leave a tree unmilled and with the outer fibers intact, it is 50 percent stronger than sawed timber with the same cross-sectional properties,”

Please join Barbara Flammang, Magdalena Glen-Schieneman and me as we host a roundtable discussion on Transitions: Ready to Step Back or Transition Out at this year’s Symposium! I think this will be an informative, inspiring, and essential discussion.
Join AWA+D and AWAF on Saturday, June 10th for the 2023 Symposium. This day-long event at the historic Herald Examiner Building in Downtown LA features speakers, round table discussions, networking, and recognition all centered on women in the design professions.
This year’s What's Next theme explores the individual and collective experiences of navigating transitions in an era of change. Personally, professionally, and collectively the day will explore the crossing points and elegant solutions for daunting choices and tantalizing potentials for change.
