We recently noticed the earlier stages of Cottony Camellia Scale on a client's Holly. It affects a number of plants including Holly, Camellia, Yew and others. This pest will progress through the stages of its life cycle this spring and early summer. It sucks out the sap and excretes a sticky honeydew substance on the leaves and anything else below. Black Sooty Mold will then appear on these surfaces. Now is the time to treat. Please reach out to us with any questions or needs. 804-517-2199.

Please check us out tonight at 8:00 pm on the Virginia Home Grown show on PBS. We've been asked to do an in-studio demo on pruning. It's been a number of years since we were last on this show and we are looking forward to the opportunity once again!

Pest of the Week: "Girdling Roots" Not exactly a Pest by definition but they can be detrimental to the long term health of the tree. Girdling Roots are roots which grow around the lower stem or basal flare of the tree. As the girdling root grows around the lower trunk a 'choking' situation will occur. This will inhibit the nutrient transport from the roots to the upper canopy and cause a slow decline that eventually could lead to tree decline and death.

These roots can be hidden beneath the surface if your tree is planted too deep or mulched too high!

We recommend properly removing or severing the Girdling Roots if they are not too severely grown into the bark and trunk tissue.

Check your trees for these issues and let us know if we can help!

We had the opportunity this past week to give a presentation on Tree & Shrub Care to the Northern Neck Master Gardeners. It was their first meeting in person since the beginning of Covid. What a wonderful group of people who had many great questions during the talk. We look forward to working with them in the future!

Pest of the Week: Boxwood Leafminer. It's typically found on American and Korean varieties of Boxwood. The adult leafminer lays eggs in mid summer. The larva hatch within the leaf and will remain there until the following spring when they emerge as adults. They can be damaging to Boxwood and can lead to significant decline if left untreated over several seasons. Give us a call if you see this pest! 804-517-2199

Anna and I had fun at the Irvington Farmer's Market this past Saturday. Our daughter Gracie Anderson was home from Va Tech on her fall break and spent the day with us. We had a lot of tree and shrub questions throughout the day and we able to meet some nice people. We look forward to being a part of the Dug In Farms native plant sale this coming Saturday. Come see us there!

We are often asked "Do you prune mature trees". We then ask them "What type of tree would you like pruned?"

Our pruning is focused on trees and shrubs that are 15 feet in height and less. So the answer may be 'Yes' if they need a mature Dogwood or Redbud pruned. We normally tell our clients 'Crape Myrtle and smaller' to provide perspective.

The majority of our pruning, thinning and shaping is performed with hand pruning tools. This allows us to make accurate cuts which are vital to the ability of the tree to seal the open wounds caused by the pruning cuts.
