Fall is one of the best times to plant new trees and perennials because they still have time to establish their roots before winter.

Come spring, you’re looking at a yard that is already planted and ready to grow.

Right now, the soil is still warm and the air will start to get cooler. Plants can grow without fighting summer heat.

Clay soil + fall rain = drainage problems.

Yards in our area don’t soak water up fast. The clay soil holds onto it. And if the grade is flat or worse, tipping toward the house you get that pooling water and washed out areas in your yard.

When we are designing a landscape or hardscaping project, we aim for positive slope away from the foundation (about 6" of drop in the first 10 ft).

This problem can get worse in the winter. If your yard is holding water now, you may have some issues when the temps start dropping.

Sometimes the answer can be in your landscaping or adding a hardscaping feature to help the water move in a certain direction.

Heavy rain is no joke! When you yard has slopes, it will create runoff and pool at the bottom.

Over time, it can start moving the ground with it.

A retaining wall is holding the grade so soil stays put and water has a controlled path instead of washing downhill into low spots, beds, and walkways.

If every storm leaves you with runoff tracks, pooling at the base of a hill, or soil that looks like it’s creeping, the slope may need structure like a retaining wall.
