With extremely low temperatures forecasted over the next 12 days in the Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana areas, we would like to share a few important steps to help protect your home and prevent issues like frozen or burst pipes.

To protect plumbing during freezing weather:
• Drip cold water from all faucets (especially those on exterior walls). This can help limit the chance of pipes freezing and bursting. While this does raise the price of your water bill, it is an easy way to notice damaged pipes, if the stream weakens or the drip stops all together.
• Open cabinet doors under all sinks to allow warm air to circulate around plumbing and cover all exposed pipes with a thermal tape or strong insulation material to help keep them warm.
• Disconnect all water hoses from exterior spigots and shut off the water supply to exterior spigots if accessible. Keeping hoses attached can cause pipes to freeze and burst.
• Cover all outside vents for crawl spaces that nay let cold air into your home. Make sure to only cover crawl space vents and not vents for your dryer or other appliances. Also keep garage doors closed as much as possible.

Additional reminders:
• Ensure air filters are changed and HVAC systems are operating properly.
• Maintain indoor temperatures at no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit and no higher than 72 degrees. This is essential not to put additional strain on your HVAC system.
• Make sure all carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working properly.
• Cover windows using insulation kits or plastic film to create an airtight seal.
• Close off unused rooms. Keep doors to unused rooms and HVAC vents closed to help keep heat in main living areas.
• Keep space heaters at LEAST three feet away from ALL flammable objects and only plug them directly into a wall outlet. Never leave a space heater unattended while it is operating or while you’re sleeping. Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby while using space heaters!
• If a space heater starts a fire, immediately get everyone out of the house and dial 911, even if you think you have the fire contained.

Absolute necessities:
• Keep your phone fully charged. If you have an emergency, you need to have a way to contact emergency services.
• Keep a flashlight and extra batteries on hand.
• Keep non-perishable food and bottled water on hand.
• Keep extra clothing and blankets on hand.
If you notice any issues such as no water flow, leaks, or signs of frozen pipes, contact a professional such as us here at JP One Construction Services right away so that the issue can be resolved as quickly as possible to avoid more serious issues.

As always, STAY SAFE! Homes can be repaired or replaced, lives lost cannot.
