🏠 Thinking about a “shingle over” to save money? Read this first. 🏠
Saw this roof going on today and it’s a great reminder — when you’re replacing a roof, the right way matters more than the cheap way.
A “shingle over” (also called a roof-over or layover) is when a contractor installs new shingles directly on top of the old ones instead of tearing the old roof off. It sounds like a bargain… until you know what you’re actually buying:
❌ You’re hiding problems, not fixing them. Rotted decking, damaged flashing, nail pops, and moisture damage all get sealed up under the new layer. Out of sight, out of mind — until it leaks.
❌ No new underlayment = no real protection. The waterproof membrane that protects your home gets skipped entirely. That’s your last line
of defense against ice dams and wind-driven rain.
❌ Double the weight on your roof structure. Two layers of asphalt shingles can add thousands of pounds. Your trusses and decking weren’t necessarily designed for that.
❌ Shorter shingle lifespan. The new shingles sit on an uneven surface and trap heat from the layer below — cooking them from underneath and reducing their life by years.
❌ Warranty problems. Many manufacturers won’t honor their warranty on a layover installation.
