Wondering how long it takes to swap out a kitchen or bathroom faucet? 🚰 For most homes it is a same-visit job, usually done in about an hour to an hour and a half.

Here is how it goes: we shut off the water under the sink, pull the old faucet and clean up the deck, set and seal the new one, hook up the supply lines, then run it and check every connection for leaks before we pack up.

What stretches the time? Corroded shutoff valves that need replacing, tight cabinet space, or a sink with extra holes to work around. If yours is straightforward, you will have a working faucet by the time we leave.

How much does gas line work cost? ⛽ Honest answer: most jobs land between $300 and $600, and the real number comes down to a few things.

The length of the new run matters most. A short hookup for a range, dryer, or grill is quick, while a longer reroute across the house takes more pipe and labor. The appliance plays a part too, since each one pulls a different volume of gas.

And code is non-negotiable. Every job gets the right shutoffs, a proper drip leg, and a pressure test to prove there are no leaks before we ever light it. Gas is one area where doing it right is the only way we do it.

There is a part on your gas water heater almost nobody knows about, and it is the one doing the most important job in the whole appliance. 🔥

Look at the very bottom. That flat perforated screen under the burner is a flame arrestor. Every gas water heater built since about 2003 has one. Its job: if gasoline, paint thinner or any flammable v***r ever spills across the floor and reaches the heater, that screen stops the flame from traveling back out and igniting the room. It is a fire stop hiding under your water heater.

It also has a second job. All the air the burner needs comes up through those little holes.

Here is where it goes wrong, and you can see both sides in this photo. On the left the holes are open, air moves freely, and the flame burns tight and blue. On the right, lint, dust and pet hair have matted over the screen. The burner cannot get enough air, so the flame goes lazy and orange, it lays soot on the bottom of the tank, and the heater works harder to make less hot water. A flame burning like that is also making carbon monoxide it should not be making.

The good news is this one is mostly on you, not on us. Keep the area around the base clear. Do not stack boxes, laundry or a litter box against it. Run the vacuum hose around the bottom of the heater a couple times a year. That is genuinely the whole maintenance.

If you look at your burner and the flame is orange instead of blue, or you see soot around the bottom, stop and have someone check it before your next load of laundry.

Go look at yours tonight. Blue or orange? 👇

Nobody wants the shower to go scalding the second someone flushes a toilet. Here is our honest ranking of the fixes, and the free one comes first.

1. Turn your water heater down to 120 degrees. Five minutes, costs nothing, and it takes the burn risk off the table for the whole house.

2. A pressure balancing valve. This is what keeps the shower steady when the washer kicks on. Most modern showers already have one.

3. A thermostatic mixing valve. You set an exact temperature and it holds there. Worth it if you have little kids or older parents at home.

Here is the part a lot of folks do not hear. If your shower already holds a steady temperature and nobody in the house is at real scald risk, you do not need a new valve. Set the heater to 120 and you are done.

We would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need. Questions about your setup? Call us at (502) 264-6053.

What temperature is your water heater set at right now? Most people have never checked.

If your Louisville home was built before the mid 70s, the drain lines behind your walls are probably cast iron. Here is the fair comparison, including where cast iron actually wins.

Cast iron is quieter. Genuinely. That heavy pipe deadens sound, which is why a 1950s house upstairs bathroom does not announce itself to the whole living room the way a newer build does. Plumbers who tell you cast iron is simply bad are skipping that part.

What cast iron does poorly is age. It rusts thin from the inside out, so the pipe looks perfectly fine from the basement while the bottom of the bore is scaled over and paper thin. That is why a camera matters more than a visual look at old iron.

PVC is lighter, cheaper to work on, and does not rot. It is also louder, and it fails differently, usually at a joint or from something crushing it.

The honest advice most people need: you do not need to rip out working cast iron. If it drains well and is not backing up, leave it alone. Replace it in sections when a wall or floor is already open for something else, and you get most of the benefit for a fraction of the cost.

Not sure what you have? We can usually tell you in a couple of minutes. (502) 264-6053

Why is my toilet flushing weakly or not fully?

A weak flush usually means the bowl isn't getting enough water fast enough to pull everything down, and the two cheapest things to check first are the water level in the tank and the little rinse holes under the rim.

Plumbing inspections when buying or selling a Louisville home

Most homeowners land $89 to $8,100. Buying: yes, and the sewer camera is the part that matters most. A general home inspection is a visual once-over.

What does it cost to clear one clogged drain in Louisville? Here is the honest range.

Most single fixture drain cleanings run $300 to $600.

What moves the price:
• How far down the blockage actually sits
• Whether we can cable it, or the line needs a heavier machine
• The age and condition of the piping itself

Now the part that might save you the call. Fill the basin, then plunge with real pressure for a solid 30 seconds. Pull the stopper assembly out and clean it while you are in there. A lot of slow drains clear right at that step, and that costs you nothing.

If it clears and then comes right back within a couple of weeks, that is the line telling you something is built up further down. That one is ours.

Either way you get the exact flat rate price before we start.

Straight answer on a shower valve replacement: most take 2 to 4 hours, and we finish the same day. 🚿

Here is where the time actually goes.

Confirming the valve and shutting off water is quick. Getting to the valve body is the part that varies. If there is an access panel behind the shower, we are in and out. If the wall is fully tiled with no access, we open a small panel and that adds time.

Then the new valve gets set and connected, and we pressure test before anything closes back up. Testing first is the whole game. Nobody wants a wall sealed up and a drip showing up next week.

One honest note. If your shower only drips from the handle, you may not need a valve replacement at all. A cartridge swap is a fraction of the cost and it is often the right call. We will tell you which one you are actually looking at before we start.

So what is yours doing, dripping or swinging hot to cold? 👇

Nobody loves talking about permits, so here is the straight answer.

Yes, replacing a water heater in Louisville requires a permit, and it has to be pulled by a licensed plumber. The city then inspects the finished install.

Why that actually matters to you:

1. The inspection is a second set of eyes on the gas, the venting, and the relief valve piping. Those are the three things that hurt people when they are done wrong.

2. It creates a paper trail. When you sell the house and the inspector asks about that heater, you have the record.

3. Insurance companies have denied claims on unpermitted work. It does not happen often, but it happens.

We quote the permit as part of the job, not as a surprise line item at the end. If someone offers to do it cheaper by skipping the permit, that is not a discount, that is risk moved onto you.

Any questions about a water heater install, we are glad to walk you through it. (502) 264-6053
