Still plenty of time to renovate a front foundation or add a layered border. With our warm temperatures, planting can be done as long as shrubs and trees are available at garden centers and until the ground freezes. Roots will grow all winter and be ready for a full season’s growth in 2021. Contact Ladybug soon if you’re planning a redo!

Fall leaves are coming down as quickly as they can be raked. Instead of disposing of them, shred them and add to your perennial borders and beds as a late season mulch. Shredded leaves, added to a depth of even 3”, are a terrific w**d deterrent. As they decompose, they will add organic matter to the soil, improve the texture and relieve compaction. A much more environmentally-friendly strategy for Fall clean-up!

Pretty redo. This client wanted a foundation landscape that would be mostly green, with a few pops of different foliage color, not too much bloom, evergreen, and very neat. She’s very happy!

The last 3 pics were ‘before’ but some things had already been removed. Fairly overgrown.

Look at this terrific graphic that shows us lots of ways we can personally - and in our landscapes/gardens - ‘be a part of the solution’ when it comes to climate change.

As gardeners, we see first-hand the effects of global warming on our plants, weather, temperature and growing season. By how and what we plant, we can be leaders to increase biodiversity in our landscapes and improve the health/bio-sustainability if our local ecosystems!

A recent front foundation renovation. The border on the right side of the sidewalk gets lots of good sunshine while the left qualifies easily as part-sun - so lots of great possibilities for foliage and bloom color & 4-season interest. The taller green/gold shrubs are False Cypress ‘Fern Spray Gold’ - one of our favorites! Evergreen, it looks great in informal & formal designs from Japanese to cottage garden styles! And, in a shadier spot, adds just a bit of shimmery gold lightness!

A good example of ‘plant it & they will come’!

We had just planted a client’s Bee Garden and Butterfly Garden kits and immediately this Black-Spotted Purple butterfly flew in to check out its new haven!

The two kits were purchased from Idlewild Butterfly House on Logan Street in Louisville. Each kit had 25 native species plants.

Thanks to our client for the photos!

Fun projects keep coming our way!

We’ve just finished installing this bite-sized rain garden with lots of colorful pollinator-friendly plants! Measuring 13’ x 10’, the rain garden takes up the entire front yard - no grass to mow makes it even more ecologically beneficial!

Another curious moment in a pollinator garden we installed this year!

The darker praying mantis is the male.

Did you know that, besides it’s two large eyes, the mantis has an additional three smaller eyes located between the two big ones? And it can turn its triangular head 180 degrees to spot its prey?
