Why do some contractors charge more than others?
In the era of gathering 3 estimates(most of which we've heard fail to even call back) and everyone watching their hard earned dollar, thats totally acceptable!
A licensed, insured contractor carries significant overhead costs. Other "chuck in a truck" or "sidework" guys do not have any of this extra expense to worry about.
Not all estimates include the same scope of work. This includes
-permit fees
-dumpster/trash removal
-protection of existing finishes
-material selection upgrades
A lower cost up front may lead to change orders and additional costs later.
Quality labor
-competitively paid tradespeople
-investing in training and safety
Less expensive contractors may be by themselves or simply use less qualified non trade specific workers.
Project management
-scheduling systems
-deposit/payment schedules
-detailed contracts
You may get the cheaper contractor that submits a carbon copy from 1984 with a handwritten price. Its 2026 people! Let's look professional!!
Reputation
-homeowners trust them
-numerous referrals
-portfolio of their work
-reviews
-schedules stay full
(We have a few of the exact opposite we've referred due to a busy schedule....you're one our s**t list! 😘)
Accountability
-warranty and/or service after completion
-financial stability to honor work
"Why is your bid so much more expensive that Joe Schmoe?? The best value is usually the contractor with the clearest scope, proper license/insurance, strong communication, quality workmanship, and a proven record of delivering projects successfully.
