🧊 Helpful Plumbing Hints When a Freeze Is Coming

Cold weather can cause major plumbing problems if pipes freeze and burst. Here are a few simple steps to help protect your home and avoid costly repairs:

🚰 1. Keep Water Moving
• Let cold water drip from faucets — especially those on exterior walls or far from your water heater.
• Even a slow drip helps prevent pipes from freezing solid.

🚪 2. Open Cabinet Doors
• Open cabinets under sinks (especially in kitchens and bathrooms) to let warm air circulate around the pipes.
• Be sure to move any cleaners or chemicals out of reach of children or pets first.

🏠 3. Protect Outdoor Plumbing
• Disconnect garden hoses and store them inside.
• Cover outdoor spigots with insulated faucet covers (you can find these at any hardware store).
• If you have a sprinkler system, shut it off and drain it.

🔥 4. Keep the Heat On
• Set your thermostat to at least 55°F, even if you’re leaving town.
• Keep garage doors closed if water lines run through the garage.

🧱 5. Insulate Exposed Pipes
• Wrap pipes in unheated areas (attics, crawl spaces, garages) with foam insulation or heat tape.
• Focus on any pipes along exterior walls or near vents and windows.

💧 6. Know How to Shut Off Water
• Locate your main water shut-off valve — it could save you from flooding if a pipe bursts.
• In an emergency, turn it off and open faucets to relieve pressure.

🧰 7. After the Freeze
• Turn faucets back on slowly to check for leaks.
• If you have no water or reduced flow, call a licensed plumber — a pipe could be frozen.
