A couple before pics of the home of some great BuildRite customers who chose us to transform their kitchen. Being new to social media we really feel documenting all aspects of this job will highlight our abilities in fabrication, cabinetry and finishing which set us above the run of the mill remodeling contractor. In addition to the onsite process we want to show the fabrication and finishing process in our shop that we use to get our results. We hope you enjoy the process as much as we do!

What NOT to do when installing trim: 1. Don’t glue your miters 2. Don’t nail your miters 🤦🏿‍♂️. All sarcasm and jokes aside, it’s the details in finish carpentry that will make an install look great and keep it looking like the day it was installed for years!

Demolition and Rough In:
When our clients decided that they wanted to go forward with us doing the project we informed them that we would need to tear everything out and start over. Although disappointed we could not save anything except for the plumbing they understood why it was necessary. First it would take longer to work around and evaluate what can or should be saved. Second for BuildRite as contractors the potential liability of relying on another contractor’s work that we did not subcontract which might be faulty is unacceptable. It is not a smart position to be in and is no win for both the client and ourselves. In order to help them save money we let our clients do their own demolition. Once they finished and were ready to start, we discovered several additional problems with what was built that would have led to an eventual failure of the shower.
- First the previous contractor applied the mortar and tile directly to drywall without instead of using cement board or waterproof and did not apply a waterproof barrier like Redguard. This means that once the grout failed and water reached the drywall it would turn soft and unstable, eventually become moldy.
- There was a water leak that the previous contractor did not inform the clients of that would have caused more issues in an already water and termite damaged section of the wall shared with the master bedroom shower.
- The main wall section of the shower where the niche was installed was not constructed or braced properly, causing the wall to be unstable once the tile was taken off. We ended up having to remove the hallway drywall and completely rebuild it to make sure it was solid.
- The previous contractor filled in the space between the foundation and the shower drain with concrete but did not set the shower drain level beforehand, exacerbating the already poor drainage.

Once again, to do things the right way takes careful analysis, an eye for potential future problems, a well thought out process to eliminate those problems and TIME!

THE BEFORE:
Hey folks here are the before pictures of a recent bathroom shower project we just finished for some great long time customers in Sicklerville NJ. James and his father Augustine originally did their kitchen several years ago and they were and still are happy with it how it turned out and held up over the years. Unfortunately when they decided to get a partial make over of their second bathroom they went with a contractor that had recently done work in the neighborhood. The results of that contractor’s three day effort are as follows:
- Numerous badly cut tiles, an improperly floated wet bed that would not drain properly
- An installed curb that was too low and because of improper sloping would cause water to buildup and overflow
- A glass install that wasn’t sufficient to prevent water from going onto the bathroom floor.
- Grout lines between tiles too thin and were failing several weeks of use
- Lippage ( when tile pieces are unaligned at their edges causing one to stick out ) which was made worse by the too thin grout lines.
Now it is not our way to just dump on other contractors to elevate ourselves. There are things that that they did right like the accuracy of layout of the wall tiles and the plumbing installation, but three days are not enough to do this job properly. It just simply takes time to do things right. Things like concrete, mortar, grout and silicone need time to cure and set properly. It takes time as well as fix and take care of the other problems you will inevitably find once you open up the walls of a bathroom during the renovation process. None of these things if done properly can or should be rushed.

Here is a beautiful bathroom renovation we completed in NE Philadelphia during Spring of 2022 for two great clients of ours. The build was a full gut rehab with a three foot expansion of the shower box into the adjoining office. It was a technically complex job with all of the room’s plumbing having to be redone and its floor having to be modified and leveled. Overall BuildRite and its clients were both pleased with the outcome!

"We build things to last son!"; Those were the words of my father and master woodworker Augustine Garcia’s words. The Garcia family have been craftsmen in the skilled trades for 3 generations and we are proud of it! Our journey as a father & son team in the remodeling world started 17 years ago. We worked together full time under the company name Mr. BuildRite for 15 years until his passing in May of 2021. That time was very difficult, however my best friend Dillon LaRoc who himself was in the trades joined me as a partner and we set a new course to continue the journey in the trades. Our pledge was to fulfil my Father’s legacy by continuing to produce a high level of workmanship and using technology, design and quality materials to add value to your home and or work space. And in keeping with that legacy we also felt it only right to continue the BuildRite name, shield and tradesman logo in honor of the foundation that Augustine Garcia’s work and teaching gave us.
