September is almost here—and so is the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in Los Angeles.

We'll be joining landscape architects and industry leaders from across the country to discuss how innovative bridge design, sustainable construction practices, and natural materials are shaping the future of outdoor spaces.

If you're attending, we'd love the opportunity to connect on Sep. 16 - 18.

Let's talk about your next bridge project.

See you in Los Angeles!

Planning a bridge project?

Here are four questions we hear almost every week:

• Can timber support emergency vehicles?
• How long does design and construction take?
• Can bridges be built over wetlands?
• What permits are typically required?

If you've ever wondered about bridge planning, engineering, or construction, we'd love to hear your questions.

Leave them below—we may answer them in an upcoming post.

Sustainability isn't just about the materials you use.

It's also about how you build.

At York Bridge Concepts, our approach includes:

🌿 Deck-Level Construction that minimizes site disturbance
🌲 Responsibly sourced timber
♻ Recycled material options
🚜 Reduced equipment impact
🌎 Long-lasting structures designed for generations

Good infrastructure should leave a positive legacy.

Every successful bridge begins long before construction starts.

Our in-house engineering and design teams work closely with clients to develop solutions that satisfy:

• Site conditions
• Load requirements
• Environmental regulations
• ADA accessibility
• Budget
• Long-term maintenance goals

No two sites are identical.

That's why no two York Bridge Concepts bridges are either.

Why are more owners choosing timber bridges?

Because they offer more than aesthetics.

✔ Faster on-site construction
✔ Lower environmental impact
✔ Natural integration into parks and developments
✔ Long-term durability
✔ Lower lifecycle maintenance than many assume

For municipalities, developers, campuses, parks, and resorts, timber often delivers the best combination of performance, sustainability, and visual appeal.

Sometimes the best engineering solution is also the most beautiful one.

Not every bridge is designed the same—and choosing the right structural system can make all the difference in performance, cost, and longevity.

At York Bridge Concepts, we evaluate every project to determine the best solution based on the site, span length, loading requirements, and environmental conditions.

Here are a few of the bridge types we commonly design and build:

🌉 Free Span Bridges – Ideal for crossing rivers and environmentally sensitive areas without intermediate supports.

🌉 Multiple Span Bridges – A practical solution for longer crossings where intermediate piers are appropriate.

🌉 Repetitive Span Bridges – Well-suited for boardwalks, trails, and wetland crossings, offering flexibility and efficient construction.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to bridge design. The best bridge is the one engineered specifically for your site and long-term goals.

Planning a bridge project? Our team can help determine which structural solution is right for you.

Friday Matthew Schafer took trip out to Rapid City to accept TWO Honor awards at the 2026 Nebraska/Dakotas Chapter ASLA conference. Sophia’s Play Garden won an Honor award in the Built Category, while the Woodland Flyway received an Honor Award in the Unbuilt Category – both at Lauritzen Gardens here in Omaha. We are honored and humbled, especially when reading the judge’s comments:

Sofia’s Play Garden
~Great attention to detail with the use of natural elements to stimulate children’s imagination. The incorporation of bright colors and a variety of activities effectively captures the attention of younger kids through playful design. I would love to experience the water play space firsthand.
~This is a play area that I want to go to! It is truly a unique application of integrated play options
~So much play was packed in but it also has a good flow and doesn’t feel overwhelming. Great job and lovely drawings! I want to visit this site ASAP.
~Really ambitious and well executed children’s garden. Balances play, planting, accessibility, and art surprisingly well. Feels joyful without becoming chaotic.
~Great graphics and an even better outcome. Looks like a fun park for the kids and a great design.

Woodland Flyway
~I really appreciate the hand-drawn concepts—it’s refreshing to see this traditional approach in today’s digital era. A great enhancement project.
~The environmental considerations seem to drive the design which is great to see!
~The sketches are beautiful, and I love how you illustrated the bird inspiration along the path.
~The accessibility improvements and ecological sensitivity work hand-in-hand rather than competing with one another. Strong experience-focused design throughout.
~This one gets high praise from me just because of the black and white difference between the existing conditions and the images of the revitalized streetscape. I hope it gets built someday.

Some bridges are simply meant to get you from one place to another.

Others become part of the destination.

Our work at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens was designed to blend naturally into one of the country's premier public gardens while preserving the surrounding landscape.

This project demonstrates how thoughtful engineering, sustainable construction methods, and handcrafted timber structures can enhance—not compete with—the natural environment.

Not every bridge project begins on dry ground.

Whether crossing wetlands, rivers, steep ravines, or environmentally sensitive habitats, the construction method can have just as much impact as the bridge itself.

York Bridge Concepts' proprietary Deck-Level Construction (Top-Down Method) allows our crews to build from the completed bridge deck instead of disturbing the terrain below.

The result:
✔ Minimal environmental impact
✔ Reduced restoration costs
✔ Protection of wetlands and waterways
✔ Safer construction in difficult terrain
It's one of the reasons owners, engineers, and environmental agencies continue to trust YBC for projects across North America.

Building bridges while protecting what makes the site special.
