Phaeolus schweinitzii (commonly known as the dyer's polypore or velvet-top fungus), or a related clustered bracket fungus like a black-staining polypore (Meripilus), which often darkens dramatically to black as it matures or is bruised.Ecology: These wood-decay fungi typically grow from buried wood, tree roots, or at the base of conifers and hardwoods, feeding on decaying organic matter or acting as a root pathogen.Edibility & Uses: They are considered tough and inedible for consumption, but fresh specimens are widely valued by natural dyers for imparting rich yellow, gold, olive, or brown shades onto natural fibers.
