Those Backflow Assemblies that have to be installed on irrigation meters, or those on commercial properties, I test those and file the reports with the governing utility.

Fall is around the corner and winter will be here before we know it. It's time to start thinking about protecting those backflows and exposed pipes from any possible freeze. The last few winters have been more than we usually expect, so think about how you want to protect them. Stay tuned, I will post some videos on how to properly wrap or cover those backflows.

So with the Hard Freeze expected over the next few days, we wanted to come to you with some tips to help you protect your backflow assembly from any freeze damage.
1) Turn the water off to your assembly and open the test c***s and drain the water out of the body of your assembly.
2) make sure to have your assembly wrapped, either pipe insulation, insulation or even an old blanket will work.
3) You will want to cover your assembly with some type of container. The idea is to keep the wind off your assembly, and trap the ground heat around your assembly.

If you simply go with wrapping the assembly, this may not be enough to protect it. Depending on exactly how low the temperatures get and for how long, and how much wind we experience. All these work against your assembly making it through without getting any Freeze damage.
If you need any help or if you have any questions about winterizing your assembly, please feel free to reach out to me at Shawn's Backflow Testing and More, at 850-319-3737. I will be more than happy to assist you with this.

These are some examples of the RPA or the Reduced Pressure Assembly. These are the best mechanical type backflow prevention assembly out there. They are a little more expensive than the other assemblies, but they are more versatile and reliable. If you own a commercial property, by most City ordinances you are required to have this backflow assembly installed on your potable supply regardless of the type of business you own. This is also the only approved backflow assembly for indoor plumbing, mostly due to height restrictions on the PVB assembly, but also for the covered risk factors that come with some commercial properties. For residential applications you would want to install this assembly if you have raised irrigation heads or hos2 bibs attached to your irrigation system and can not or do not want to lower them. The RPA only has to be installed at a minimum of 12 inches above finished grade, but recommended to not be higher than 36 inches. If you are installing one these in a known flood zone, this needs to be taken into consideration as well. You will need to install the assembly above the highest flood stage for the area, again a minimum of 12 above the flood plain, but not more than 36 inches above. Knowing the application for which you are purchasing and installing a backflow assembly is one of the most critical aspects. If you are unsure of what type of assembly you need, you can always give me a call at 850-319-3737. I would be more than happy to give you a no-cost quote and consultation of which assembly would best for you.

We are at that time of the year where we can and most likely will see freezes. Make sure to take care of those backflow assemblies. You will want to insulate them, but remember your assembly is designed to "dump" water when the utility loses pressure. That said, male sure you insulate your assembly in such a way that it can still dump as it was designed to do. If you need help with this or would like to know if your assembly is properly protected, please give me a call, 850.319.3737. I will be happy to assist you. The best protection is a backflow "hot box". This is an insulated box that sits over your assembly, that traps heat from the sun during the day and helps hold the heat from the ground under your assembly. Also it keeps the wind from blowing heat away from your assembly.

With the threat of a hard freeze coming Thursday night through Sunday. You will want to take precautions to protect your backflow assembly. The best way will be to cover the assembly with some type of container, like a plastic garbage can, something that will trap the heat from the ground and keep your assembly above the freezing temperature. If you do not have anything like that, the next best thing would be to take an old blanket and wrap it over your assembly. If you don't have an old blanket, the last thing that would work would be to turn the water off either at the meter or by the inlet valve on the assembly. Then open the test c***s and drain the assembly. Then wrap the assembly with anything you have, an old towel, t-shirts, or tarp. You will want to take whatever precautions you can. If anything does happen to your assembly due to the freeze, call or email me and I will help you out. 850-319-3737 or [email protected]. Good luck and stay warm! If you have any questionsor need help, please feel free to reach out anytime!
