With watering restrictions in place in many communities, the rain you get has to count. On compacted soil, much of it runs off before it reaches the roots.

Core aeration pulls plugs two to three inches deep and opens the root zone back up. Late August through October is the window, when cool-season grass is growing hardest and the holes double as seedbeds for overseeding.
