“The forsythia is blooming and if you don’t put the crabgrass control down right now, I’ll be surrounded with crabgrass this summer!"
This is the Old Farmer’s Almanac tale run amuck. The forsythia is not a good judge of when to apply the crabgrass control for a number of factors. The soil temperature needs to be above 55 degrees for a week for any germination to take place and any heavy frost or freeze will damage any crabgrass that germinates too early. The germination of crabgrass is determined by the number of Growing Degree Days (GDD) and soil temperature. The forsythias blooming can start from 1 to 25 Growing Degree Days. Crabgrass germination begins at around 200 GDD. That is a huge difference in timing! What started out as “apply crabgrass control after the forsythia blooms drop” has turned into “apply crabgrass control as soon as you see the forsythia start to bloom.” That’s a difference of over a month.
If applied too early, there may not be adequate control later in the season when it is needed. Our second fertilizer treatment does also include a pre & post emergent crabgrass control. Later in the season we will spot treat with a post emergent control for any crabgrass that may have broken through the barrier. Again, this may happen for a number of reasons including improper mowing practices, drought, insect damage, etc.
So, with all of this being said there is one thing that is needed, and that is patience. It is a long season, and it has just started. Our lawn care programs will certainly address any crabgrass concerns, as well as weeds, grubs, summer insects, and many other issues that may arise. The snow is melting quickly but wait....what's THAT?!?!
This may be common in areas where the snow has been laying for an extended period of time. Shoveling and dispersing the snow from these piles will help to expedite the melting. Snow mold is common after a winter like we have had. Raking out the areas to encourage airflow is a simple step to aid in recovery. Areas along the driveway, walkway and street, or anywhere the snow has been piled from shoveling will be the most susceptible. Good morning, everyone! Have you looked at the 10-day forecast recently? It looks like it is time to start getting excited for spring! As it looks now, we are planning on starting applications on Monday, March 16th. That all depends on the amount of rain we get the week before. If it is too wet, we will delay our start date. As of now though, that's the plan. The granular lime and the granular crabgrass control with fertilizer will be the first 2 applications to be done. If you still have snow piles along the driveway or walkway, try dispersing these piles to expedite their disappearance so the edges are clear for any applications coming up. This will also help to combat snow mold (talked about in a previous post). If you still have heavier snow in the shaded areas or these piles are still along the edges when we schedule the application, we will let you know and will reschedule the treatment for another day. Oh boy, oh boy.... Can't wait to get back to work! See you soon! Happy 5th anniversary to us being in our new facility! 🎊🎉🎁
It has been a pleasure to be serving our communities for over 35 years and even better since we moved to our new location. Right off of Rt. 100/Chestnut St. in Zionsville, it is easily visible from the street. Thank you for all of the great compliments about our shop and how it looks when you pass it. For those of you who have had the chance to stop and visit, it is awesome to have the proper facility to greet you with 😊. Our conference room was renovated immediately to try to showcase some of our work and to make it a comfortable and enjoyable experience when you are meeting with our friendly and knowledgeable staff to go over your projects. Personally, I (Brian Dunning- Lawn/Tree & Shrub manager) couldn't imagine a better place to work and, after 13 years and going, have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure. A big congratulations to all the employees and staff who have made this a great place to work and to the owner, Mike Rhoads, for giving us all the opportunity to be part of a winning team!!! 😁👍🤩🙆‍♀️🙋🧏‍♂️🎂🍾🎉

Good morning, everyone! We dodged a bullet with the storm over the weekend. I'd much rather get surprised with less, than more for sure. There looks to be a few little snow events in the near future but don't see anything too worrisome. Soon we will be seeing some early spring color with the bulbs popping through the snow. 🌷🪻 Always a welcome sight. As soon as we get enough snow melt, we will be scheduling the lime applications and the crabgrass controls.
