Italy just did what every Netflix subscriber in the world wishes their country would do.
A court in Rome has ruled that Netflix's price increases in Italy between 2017 and 2024 were illegal because the company failed to provide clear justification in its contracts. The ruling covers four separate hikes and could affect over 5 million Italian subscribers.
Netflix has been ordered to roll back prices to 2017 levels and refund affected customers up to €500 for Premium and €250 for Standard plans. The company has 90 days to notify all current and former subscribers or face a daily fine. Netflix says it will appeal.
Similar cases are now emerging in Poland and Spain. If upheld, this ruling could set a precedent across Europe.
