Myth vs. Fact: Power Strips Add More Power to a Circuit
Does a power strip give an outlet more electrical capacity?
Does a power strip give an outlet more electrical capacity? No. It adds places to plug in equipment, but every device still draws electricity from the same branch circuit. If the load exceeds what the wiring can safely carry, the breaker may trip, plugs may overheat or connections may become a fire risk. More outlets do not mean more available power.
Portable heaters, air fryers, microwaves, coffee makers and window air conditioners can quickly use much of a circuit's capacity. Never plug a space heater into a power strip or extension cord. Avoid daisy-chaining strips, running cords under rugs or using equipment with a loose plug, damaged cord or scorch marks. Surge protection may help with voltage spikes, but it does not prevent an overloaded circuit.
