It’s not just the stone - it’s how you use it.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at some of the stone selections for our McCubbins Lakefront Remodel. Our clients chose the same natural stone for their two fireplaces and exterior, but selected two different cuts to create distinct looks.

When working with natural stone, there are several details that can change the overall feel:

• The cut - A more linear, layered cut can create a cleaner, more structured look, while a more irregular cut feels natural and rustic.
• The installation - Dry stacking creates a tighter, more seamless appearance, while visible mortar joints can give the stone a more traditional look.
• Mortar color - A mortar color that blends with the stone creates a softer look, while more contrast makes the individual stones stand out.
• Mortar joint size - The amount of mortar between each piece can also change how much of the stone itself takes center stage.

These are the kinds of details we consider when selecting materials - not just what you choose, but how all of the details work together to create the look you want.

That’s one of the most rewarding parts of the design process: taking individual materials and thoughtfully considering the cut, finish, installation and surrounding elements so everything feels intentional and cohesive.
