Most major purchases start online now, long before anyone talks to a salesperson. Homeowners research cars and appliances this way, comparing options at their own pace before ever picking up the phone.

Siding was one of the last major home decisions that didn't work this way. The first real look at your options used to happen after a consultant was already sitting in your living room.
Ridge Top's 3D Designer changes that. Compare color combinations on a Tuesday night after the kids are in bed, come back to it over the course of a week, and only reach out once you actually know what you want.

This week's blog covers exactly how the tool works and how that preview connects into a real, usable estimate.

Woodpecker damage is one of the more common reasons homeowners finally make the switch from wood to vinyl siding. Once birds find a soft or hollow spot, they tend to come back to the same spot again and again, and patch repairs rarely hold for long.

Vinyl doesn't give woodpeckers the same soft surface to work with, which is one of the quieter reasons it holds up better over time, alongside the low maintenance most homeowners notice first.

Here's what one Ridge Top homeowner had to say after her old wood siding was replaced.

Ridge Top Exteriors puts our name behind every window we install, and that means we are selective about who we work with.

🪟 As we grow in the Madison area, we are looking to bring on one skilled window installation crew who meets the same standard we hold our own team to. That means factory trained technique, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to doing the job right the first time, every time.

This is not open to just anyone. We vet every partner crew closely before they ever step foot on a customer's home, because our reputation in this community was built one project at a time and we intend to keep it that way.

➡️ If you lead a window installation crew in Madison and you take the same pride in your work that we do, we would like to talk.

📞 Call our office at (608) 218-4904 to start the conversation.

Certified and uncertified vinyl siding installations can look completely identical on the day the job wraps up. The difference only shows up after the siding goes through its first real swing between hot and cold weather.

Certification exists specifically to prevent that gap: proper fastening, correct expansion clearance, and sealed transitions around every window and door.

This week's blog covers exactly what certification is supposed to guarantee, and where uncertified work usually fails first.

Every layer behind your siding has a job to do, and skipping or rushing even one of them can compromise the whole system.

That's why certification matters. We're an Elite Preferred James Hardie installer, a distinction earned through manufacturer specific training most contractors don't have. Our crews aren't guessing at best practices. They're following the standards James Hardie itself requires for top tier installers.

The layers you can't see after the siding goes on are usually the ones that determine whether your home stays protected or ends up with hidden water damage down the road.

Buckling siding isn't cosmetic. It usually means the panels were nailed too tight to expand and contract with temperature changes, which is one of the most common mistakes an uncertified installation makes.

Left alone, that stress eventually opens gaps at the seams, and that's where water gets behind the panel and starts causing the kind of damage you can't see from the driveway.

This week's blog covers what proper certification is actually supposed to guarantee, including the expansion gaps that keep this from happening in the first place.

This roof got a stunning transformation. 🏡

🔹 Roof: GAF Timberline HDZ
🔹 Color: Hunter Green

A bold color choice that gives this farmhouse style home real personality while still holding up to whatever the seasons bring.

Results like this come from working with a GAF Master Elite certified installer, the highest certification GAF offers and one held by less than 3% of roofing contractors nationwide. That means every layer gets installed to manufacturer standards, not just the shingles on top.

Asphalt shingles aren't the most common roofing material by accident.

According to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, roughly 80% of homes in the U.S. are topped with asphalt shingles, more than every other roofing material combined. That kind of market share doesn't happen without a real reason behind it.

Part of it is cost. Asphalt shingles remain one of the most affordable roofing materials to install without sacrificing performance. Part of it is availability. Because so many manufacturers produce asphalt shingles, homeowners get more options in color, style, and warranty coverage than almost any other roofing material offers.

Most shingles homeowners choose today are the thicker, more dimensional style, not the flat 3-tab shingles many homes were originally built with. That thicker profile typically carries manufacturer warranties in the 25 to 30 year range, well beyond what older 3-tab shingles were rated for.

None of this means every asphalt shingle roof performs the same. Proper attic ventilation, correct nailing, and quality underlayment all affect how close a roof actually gets to its rated lifespan. Two identical shingles installed differently can age very differently.

Here's a detail that costs homeowners real money: most insurance policies start the claim filing window from the date of the storm, not the date you noticed the damage. Wait a few weeks to call anyone, and you create a timing gap an adjuster can use to question the claim, even when the damage is completely real.

Documentation matters just as much as timing. Adjusters work from what they can verify, not from what you tell them happened. That means photos from multiple angles, close-ups of specific damage points, and a written record of when the storm hit versus when you noticed the problem. A professional inspection report carries more weight than a homeowner's description alone, especially for damage that's subtle from the ground.

There's also a right and wrong order to all of this. Temporary fixes, like a tarp over an exposed area, are reasonable before the adjuster arrives. Permanent repairs aren't, since they can remove the evidence the adjuster needs to see. Having your roofing contractor on-site during the adjuster's visit helps too. They can point directly to damage an adjuster might miss in a short walkthrough.

This week's blog breaks down the full process, from what to document first to what to say when you call your insurance company.

The part of a roof replacement most homeowners dread is not the cost. It is the disruption. A crew on your property, debris in your yard, and no clear sense of what is happening or how long it will take.

Kate Van Ness from Madison had a different experience. The crew worked clean, communicated every step of the process, and left her property in better shape than they found it.

That is not a bonus. That is how every Ridge Top project is supposed to go
