🌱 Your Lawn Is Talking… Are You Listening?

If your lawn is looking a little lighter green than it should, thinning out, or allowing w**ds to creep in, it may be trying to tell you something.

This time of year, health turf should be thick, green, and actively growing. When w**ds begin to show up, it’s often because the grass isn’t strong enough to crowd them out.

At Wenger Lawn Service, we don’t just treat w**ds... we help build healthier, thicker turf tthat naturally resists them.

✅ Fertilization
✅ W**d Control
✅ Fire Ant Treatments
✅ Lawn Health Programs

A beautiful lawn doesn’t happen by accident. It happens through consistent care and proper timing.

WHY FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN… AND WHEN SHOULD YOU DO IT?

A healthy lawn doesn’t happen by accident. Just like people need food and water to stay healthy, your grass needs nutrients to grow thick, green, and strong. Fertilization gives your lawn the nutrients it loses through mowing, heat, rain, and everyday stress.

So why is fertilizing important?

✅ Helps your lawn grow thicker and greener
✅ Strengthens roots for drought and heat tolerance
✅ Helps crowd out w**ds naturally
✅ Improves recovery from stress and damage
✅ Keeps your lawn healthier year-round

But timing matters just as much as the fertilizer itself.

At Wenger Lawn Service, we apply treatments year round to give your lawn exactly what it needs for the season ahead.

🌿 Late Winter / Early Spring
Pre-emergent + post-emergent applications help stop w**ds before they take over while preparing your lawn for spring green-up.

☀️ Spring & Summer
Fertilizer applications promote healthy growth and color while targeted w**d control handles common summer w**ds like crabgrass, spurge, and nutsedge.

🍂 Fall
Fall treatments are one of the MOST important applications of the year. Winterizer fertilizer strengthens roots while pre-emergent treatments help reduce winter w**ds and stickers before they become a problem next season.

A properly timed lawn program doesn’t just make your grass LOOK better… it helps create a stronger, healthier lawn all year long.

If you’ve been wondering why your lawn struggles with w**ds, thin spots, or poor color, timing and proper fertilization could be the missing piece.

Landscape Transformation – Phase 1 Complete

We wrapped up Phase 1 of this landscape project and it’s already bringing this backyard space to life.

This stage included:
✔️ New landscape bed layout
✔️ Fresh hardwood mulch installation
✔️ Stepping stone pathway
✔️ Installation of ornamental grasses and seasonal color
✔️ Defined planting areas for future growth

The goal was to create a clean foundation that will grow into a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape over time.

This project will continue in additional phases, and we’re excited to show how it evolves as more plants mature and new elements are added.

Good landscaping isn’t always about instant results - it’s about building something that gets better every season.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your landscape, we’d love to help you plan it.

Why Are Fire Ants So Bad in Mississippi?

If you’ve noticed fire ant mounds popping up in your yard, you’re not alone. Fire ants thrive in Mississippi because our warm climate and mild winters allow colonies to stay active almost year-round.

A single fire ant mound can contain 100,000+ ants, and if left untreated, colonies can quickly spread across your lawn.

🔥 Why treating fire ants is important:

• Protects children and pets from painful stings
• Prevents mounds that damage your lawn and dull mower blades
• Stops colonies from multiplying and spreading
• Keeps your yard safer and more enjoyable

📅 The best time to treat fire ants?

Spring and fall are the most effective times, because ants are actively feeding and carrying bait back to the queen — which eliminates the whole colony.

At Wenger Lawn Service, we offer professional fire ant treatments that target the colony at its source.

Put down the chainsaw and pick up the hand-held loppers!

Crape myrtles are popular for their low-maintenance beauty, but they can benefit from some light pruning this time of year -- January to early March!

Crape myrtles that are only pruned to remove suckers (small sprouts that grow from the roots and main branches) and dead, broken, or diseased branches will grow into their natural shape. If you want to maintain a natural shape, do not drastically reduce them every year.

Topping removes all the upper branches. Many people prefer this look, and crape myrtles can survive topping. However, this severe method of pruning results in a disproportionate tree, can shorten the life of your crape myrtle, and will reduce its overall flowering.

You don’t have to prune crape myrtles drastically to have them fit in your landscape. Crape myrtles come in a variety of sizes, from miniature shrubs to 30-feet-tall trees. (Major pruning is not required if you select the right cultivar for your space!!)

🌱 Burw**d (Stickers) in Mississippi - Why February Is CRITICAL

If you dealt with painful sticker burrs last spring…
February is your moment to stop it.

Burw**d (also called lawn stickers or spurw**d) is a winter annual w**d. That means:

• It germinates in fall
• It grows all winter
• It produces painful stickers in spring
• Then it dies when summer heat arrives

By the time you feel stickers in May… it’s already too late.

Right now in February, burw**d is still in its early growth stage - small, low to the ground, and MUCH easier to control.

What it looks like:
• Low, fern-like leaves
• Grows flat in thin turf
• Usually shows up in weak, compacted areas

How to Treat Burw**d in February:

1️⃣ Post-emergent treatment NOW
Apply a broadleaf herbicide while the plant is small and actively growing.
Timing is everything - once it forms burs, control becomes much harder.

2️⃣ Strengthen the turf
Burw**d thrives in thin lawns.
Proper fertilization and mowing height help crowd it out long term.

3️⃣ Fall pre-emergent next season
To truly prevent it, pre-emergent should be applied in early fall before it germinates.

If your yard had stickers last year, chances are they’re already growing quietly right now.

💬 Message us “STICKERS” and we’ll help you stop them before they become painful.
