This is my dad: Sgt Jay Michael Garrett, United States Airforce. He served in Vietnam as a crew chief on a B-52 bomber, he is from Monahans, Texas where he grew up working in the oil field as a ruffneck and later on as a truck driver. I really feel like he gave me the best childhood that a kid could ask for running 48 state in the passenger seat of a white freightliner the blue peterbuilt, or cryin shame. That was his International eagle cabover. While riding we would listen to nothing but Texas music like Billy Joe shaver Waylon and Willie or townz van zant. He is also a huge fan of rock n roll and the blues, he says that you have to be a student of music and a student of everything really. I can remember at every meal we would pull out a book from his reader's digest collection and play " enrich your word power " to make sure that I understood the world. afterwards, we would proceed to the gym to work off dinner. I remember him quitting his job the summer before I started high-school because my school didn't offer summer football camp to freshman, so he got a local job to make time to help me train. In my twenties I followed in his footsteps in the Texas oilfield as a ruffneck. I started in worms corner went to throwing chain, skipped motors and made daylight derrick hand! ( thanks Edgard). I WAS NOT A FAN OF DERRICKS. My last hitch as daylight Derrick hand, we had a little blowout, as I look back on it, it wasn't really that bad and I was being dramatic. The next day there was a black leg in the derrick which meant I was going to have to lay in collers... I was terrified... I drug up right then(that means I quit). I called my dad on the way home and he chewed my ass for an hour. I told him that I was afraid of the blowout.he knew I was lying and he chewed my ass even more... you NEVER show weakness to the world! I've learned a whole lot from my dad over the years. He is the greatest man I've ever known and he is still my hero. he always said that the paycheck on Friday is what makes a man, but what he has shown me every day of my life is what really makes a man: he has NEVER not once put anything or any body above his children. He has always had our back even if we were wrong, and would fight the devil himself to keep us safe! That is what makes a man, and that is what makes a father! happy Father's day dad. I love you.
