Over the next couple of weeks, thousands of households in Houston will begin reconstructing their homes and businesses.

Allow me to offer some advice that I have said for years.

I know we still have a week to go and I pray it doesn't get worse. I have also had some friends ask me about their flooring. So before anyone goes rushing after the storm, I offer this advice.

Many people will need to redo their floors because they had wood or carpet. When choosing your new floors think of this.

If there is a flood again, drywall and baseboards will need to be replaced. That is a given. But here is a breakdown on flooring costs. Size of home and footage may vary so this is just to give an example.

1. Wood floor = 10K
2. Carpet = 10K
3. Laminate = 10K
4. Tile = $12.98 for a mop.

Tile, if properly installed, will last and survive a flood. That is why you see it used in pools.
