Here is a picture I took of some Carissa Holly showing some severe winter burn. Usually when I see this on a normally cold tolerant plant, my first assumption is these plants were sheared after the "safe" cutoff date for heavy shearing of July 15th. This is because when summer shearing takes place, evergreen plants like Hollies will produce a flush of new growth in response. This new growth has to mature or "harden off" before winter sets in and the plant becomes dormant. Late shearing(after July 15th) will not always harden off and the more tender leaves will desiccate with the cold temperatures. Since this winter has produced temperatures that we have not seen in 20 years or so, this kind of winter injury is more prevalent.

For this reason, it is unwise to do any heavy shearing or cutting back of evergreen shrubs including Holly and Boxwood after the middle of July. Some light pruning to "clean up" some stragglers off of your hedges is fine.

The best time to do your hard pruning/shearing on your hedges is from March through the end of June.
