Removed a couple of hacked up avocado trees in Iao Valley today. Avocados, or Persea americana, do extremely well in the various microclimates on Maui. Unfortunately, these avos were topped a couple of years ago, most likely to slow their explosive growth rate.
Listen up people: topping is about the worst thing you can do for your trees! Not only will the tree send out aggressive new growth to compensate for the loss of its apical stem but it will invite decay and rot into the heart of the tree. These stems were like drums at the top - hollowed right out from all the decay!
Removals are bittersweet. Its sad to see a tree get whacked... but fun to do the whacking 😎
