So, after doing payroll for the last few weeks I’m realizing that our unemployment insurance costs have quadrupled for 2026, yet we have not laid anyone off that has claimed benefits in years!
This is what I find after inquiring:

unemployment insurance (UI) costs for Massachusetts employers are projected to rise significantly for 2026 as part of a multi-year trend driven by the depletion of the state's unemployment trust fund. While the taxable wage base for 2026 remains at $15,000, tax rates are expected to increase, with forecasts indicating they will reach their highest potential level by 2028.
Key 2026 Unemployment Insurance Factors
Rising Costs: Reports suggest employers face higher tax rates to replenish the trust fund, with estimated contributions increasing from $1.1 billion in 2024 to $2.4 billion by 2026, as tax schedules shift upward.
Increased Benefits Duration: Due to elevated unemployment rates, the state is applying a trigger that extends benefit duration from 26 to 30 weeks. This longer duration is estimated to add approximately $4,400 in additional costs per claimant in 2026.
Maximum Benefit Hike: As of October 2025, the maximum weekly benefit amount increased to $1,105, making it among the highest in the nation.
Tax Rates: For 2025/2026, State Unemployment Tax Act (SUTA) rates range from 0.83% to 12.65%. New employer rates are 2.13% (5.45% for construction).

Really?!?! Thank you Ms. Governor.
Now actively looking to relocate the entire operation to New Hampshire, or better yet…. Time to retire.

As if we did not know....Boston has the worst traffic in the world! Yup, heard it years ago and now according to the latest AI models, we take the top spot.
Well, as a contractor that is in and out of the city multiple times a week, may I just "try" and justify my short temper?
Can I get an Amen....or maybe a Macallen at days end?
